There's new hotels and attractions opening throughout the city, dining is superb in the most Michelin-starred city in the world, and Japan will welcome a new emperor on May 1. Plus, the city has one of the lowest crime rates of any major city in the world, and visitors can enjoy a mix of traditional tea ceremonies, temples, and tech-infused skyscrapers.

Das Stue

Das Stue has introduced a new way to explore Berlin in the summer.  The 79-room Das Stue is located in Berlin's former Royal Danish embassy, a landmarked 1930's structure. The historic hotel now has six e-bikes by Smart that are available for guest use. The company Smart is owned by DaimlerAG, the same company that produces the Mercedes Benz. The e-bikes have a 250 watt hub motor, a display that controls drive and generator levels, and allows riders to check time, trip kilometers, or remaing power.

To see Berlin in the summer is to experience the city at its best. Das Stue is located in Berlin's central Tiergarten disctrict, right within the prestigious Embassy Quarter, adjacent to the 210 acre Tiergarten Park and facing the Berlin Zoo. Some of the most famous cultural institutions like the Culture Forum, the Philharmonic and the New National Gallery are only minutes away, and for the shopping enthusiasts, both Kurfürstendamm, with the legendary KaDeWe, and Friedrichstrabe are within easy reach. Considered to be Europe's greenest city, it has a plethora of parks, urban beaches lining the Spree river where one can watch the boats cruise by; rooftop beach bars and cafes, and the surrounding lakes to go swimming, sailing, or canoeing.

Bikes are available on a complimentary first-come, first-serve basis.

Soho House Berlin

Originally opened in 1928 as a department store, the property that now houses Soho House Berlin was seized by the wartime government before being occupied by the post-war, Communist regime until 1956. It was then used to house the Communist Party archives and the Central Committee’s Historical Institution. After German reunification the building was legally returned to the descendents of its original owners, and remained empty until the hotel was opened.

It's long been said that in heaven the French are the cooks, and while Germany has its own national specialties, like the Currywurst that you simply have to try at Konnopke's Imbiss, you might find after a few days that you'll be lusting after the luxury of French delicacies.  And the Hotel Concorde Berlin certainly delivers on the French flair we've come to expect from all the Concorde Hotels.  La Faubourg is a modern take on the traditional brasserie and even offers al fresco dining on the terrace once the city warms in May. With a visible sightline to the famous Gedächtniskirche, elegant in its preserved, broken beauty, the Hotel Concorde is ideally located in Berlin's ritzier and more glamourous southwestern corner.  Just steps from the Kurfurstendamm, the main Allee that is home to much of the city's upscale shopping establishments, you can also sneak away into more secluded spots with the real personality that makes Berlin so special.  Check out the nearby A-Trane Jazz Club, a hole-in-the-wall joint that has supported the underground Jazz scene for two decades and has played home to some of the greats and up-and-coming stars, like Toumani Diabate and Matthew Shipp.

The hotel itself has 311 rooms, including 44 suites, and each brings a unique take on its sleek, modern style.  The whole building was designed by German architect Jan Kleihus and built just in 2005, and his cutting-edge style is infused in the very foundations. The Hotel Concorde Berlin understands the contemporary demands of luxury, coming from a nation with a long history of defining the European standard, and transplanting that cultural expectation to Berlin has created the perfect fusion of the modern, bustling metropolis with the storied tradition of French dining and hospitality.  It's bucket list material for sure.

Swissotel Berlin

No matter how many blog posts, review sites, and travel brochures you read, nothing can compare to personal experience of a city. I want to share some of that first-hand experience with you, not as an expert, but as one traveler to another. In each installment, I’ll share my experience of a city I’ve lived in or explored extensively. And to start things off, there’s no better first destination than Berlin.

Berlin is a city so full of personality it’s impossible to begin talking about it having any sort of unified character. In a lot of ways, Berlin is at the crossroads of modernity – because it was forced to rebuild so much in the last twenty years, it is at the forefront of new technologies and environmental policy, but all you need do is turn around to see the past. Sleek and modernized around the bombed out remains of history, an underground life bustles below the veneer of its tourist-friendly city center. Each neighborhood seems to be an oasis with a distinct personality from any other. But the pulse of a conflicted city, still determining its character, beats through the veins of the trolley lines and U-bahn stations that tie these disparate regions together in a cohesive web that only grows stronger as it pulls against itself. There’s a certain measure of unity to the ever-changing cityscape.

And that’s why I love it so much. Nowhere else I’ve been has a city felt so alive beneath my feet. Everyone knows the must-see locations: Checkpoint Charlie, Alexanderplatz, the remains of the Wall, the Brandenburg Gate. But what you don’t realize until you visit is that the real charm of the city is how it has grown up around these historical centers. Just walking the streets, you’ll see how a never-repaired husk of a building has been turned into an enclave for industrial art; how despite the line dividing the city having been consigned to history, the feeling of division still floats in the air. From the regal Charlottenberg palace to the contemporary art exhibit lodged in an old train station, Berlin is a city that wants to be seen, to be lived in.

If you want to see more than just another cookie-cutter royal palace or national history museum, Berlin cannot fail to deliver. Get off the beaten path, explore the neighborhoods, and really experience a city in transition. So grab a room at any one of its top-class hotels and give yourself an opportunity to fall in love with it the way I have.
