Winter at The Point on Saranac Lake

January 13, 2009| By:K. Clare Johnson

Winter at The Point means more than curling up in one of the delightful Adirondack chairs in front of a roaring fire, and gazing out at Saranac Lake. The Point Albany Of course, you can do that too, but the rustically elegant property with its eleven distinctive guest quarters, offers a whole lot to do in the frigid months. Olympic level downhill and cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, and ice-skating are of course, available.

Additionally the hotel has its own ice-fishing shanty, and the chef will happily prepare your catch of the day for supper. The Point also fires up the grill for snow barbecues (guests are advised to dress warmly) and antiquing abounds in the nearby villages of Lake Placid and Saranac Lake. Visit the property in February and you'll be in town for the nation's oldest winter carnival.

The Olympic facilities in nearby Lake Placid offer the only public bobsled and luge runs in the country, tobogganning, dog sledding, speed skating, ski jumping, alpine ski competitions, international hockey and figure skating, and aerial competitions. The Point provides cross-country skis, poles and boots; snowshoes; ice fishing equipment; ice skates, hockey sticks and pucks.
