Raise a Glass to Napa

I recently had the pleasure of watching the slightly uneven, yet fascinating, movie called "Bottle Shock." Based on the true story of The Paris Wine Tasting of 1976, or the Judgment of Paris, it brings to light just how far American winemakers have come, particularly California winemakers, in only about 30 years time. This historic event was organized by Steven Spurrier, a British wine merchant. French judges did blind tastings of top-quality Chardonnay and Cabernet Cauvignon wines from France and California, with the belief that France produced the best wines in the world. California wineries ended up rating best in both categories, opening up the biased wine industry to the production and prestige of different regional wines worldwide. The love of California vines has definitely grown over the years, and the state is now home to some of the best cellars in production today.

Beginning in late August, and continuing through to November, is harvest time in Napa Valley, when the ripe grapes change color much like the leaves on trees in the fall. This period is considered high season, with all the great wineries offering "Harvest Events" such as tastings and parties to celebrate the red and white grapes reaching maturity. Though it can often be hard to find accommodations during this time, luxury resorts such as The Carneros Inn and Meritage Resort at Napa still have openings, with rates actually starting as low as 260 USD per night. If good wine, good people, and good food sound like the perfect ingredients for a fall getaway, then you should consider a trip to Napa Valley. Salud!
