Can the Tonga Room at the Fairmont San Francisco Be Saved?

October 25, 2010| By:Mary Winston Nicklin

The Tonga Room, Fairmont San FranciscoWe've been busy bemoaning the loss of the Tonga Room at the Fairmont San Francisco, but now it looks like there's hope for this kitschy SF institution. (The basement tiki bar, where a live band performs on a raft floating in a lagoon under twice-hourly "rainstorms," is a beloved San Francisco watering hole. Major renovation plans for the luxury hotel threatened the closure of the bar.) The San Francisco Chronicle reports that "a compromise deal that could save the Fairmont Hotel's historic Tonga Room from demolition when the City Planning Commission meets to decide the fate of the hotel's $130 million renovation and construction plan." A local restaurateur to the rescue! The Tonga Room may be bought and moved to a new site.
