Location Summary
Lake Titicaca is more than a lake; it is culture, nature and a key component of the Andes. In addition to its historic and spiritual significance, this area is also revered for its natural and pure beauty. The landscape is diverse and rich; from Titilaka's shoreline, you can see terraced farmlands that run right up to the base of the surrounding snow-capped mountain chains as well as the islands of Titicaca. The most well known islands on the lake are the floating Islands of Uros, a group of 42 man-made islands made of reeds. Taquile, another well-known island, is a hilly formation 35 kilometers east of Puno. The island hosts rich living cultures, pre-Inca ruins and agricultural terraces. Additionally, Lake Titicaca is the world’s highest navigable lake for large vessels, at 12,500 feet (3,810 meters) above sea level in the Andes Mountains of South America.
