Record-Breaking Wine: $53,000 Bottle of Dom Perignon Sold at London’s Westbury Hotel

April 30, 2010| By:Mary Winston Nicklin

Dom Perignon Rose VintageThe most expensive bottle ever sold in a British bar? A Methuselah of Dom Perignon Rose Gold 1996 recently sold at The Westbury Hotel's posh Polo Bar. Price tag? A mere $53,000. The "mystery Russian billionaire" who ordered the bubbly is reported to have tipped the barman $16,000, on top of the included service charge of $6,600, bringing the total tab to a cool $76,000, or $2,375 per glass. (A Methuselah= 8 regular bottles of Champagne.) Only 35 bottles of the "King of Champagnes" are produced every year, and the 1996 is considered an especially divine vintage.
