Lunch in London’s Parks with the Athenaeum Hotel’s Romantics Picnic

August 10, 2010| By:Mary Winston Nicklin

Athenaeum HotelWho says that summer's sultry days are numbered? London's Athenaeum Hotel-- the adored, family-run hotel overlooking Green Park and Buckingham Palace-- wants guests to take advantage of the dog days of summer by indulging in a favorite London pastime: the picnic. The hotel can assemble a "Romantics Picnic Hamper" (£99 for two people) brimming with tasty treats for a gourmet feast in the park. (To whet the appetite, here's the contents: roast rib eye steak sandwiches with horseradish sauce; asparagus with olive oil and truffle vinaigrette; salmon and cream cheese and chive bagels; a bottle of Louis Roederer Champagne; a sweet selection of white chocolate covered strawberries, vanilla cheesecakes and chocolate brownies.) To quote Conde Nast Traveller:

"The concept of the Romantics Picnic Hamper was thought up because of the hotel's unique Royal Parks location - we are sandwiched in between Green Park, St James Park and Hyde Park. We always try to encourage guests to make the most of this great location," says Athenaeum Head Chef, David Marshall. "It's a breath of wilderness in the midst of the city, and it's very romantic." The hotel's concierge recommends taking the picnic by the water of Canada memorial in Green Park, a stone's throw away from the hotel.
