Incredible India! Living Large at the Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur

November 27, 2009| By:Mary Winston Nicklin

Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur

This could be the most romantic place in the world. Appearing like a brightly lit castle floating in the middle of Lake Pichola, the Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur makes guests feel like honored guests of the Maharana. Crafted of gleaming white marble and mosaics, said to be reminiscent of the Taj Mahal, the Taj Lake Palace is frequently ranked among the top hotels in the world. To describe the rooms as "opulent luxury" doesn't even cut it. Royal Butlers attend to guests' needs in the palace, sprawling across a four-acre island. The interiors are brimming with luxurious details: marble pillars, fairy-tale gardens, priceless paintings, rich silks, and colorful murals. Originally built in 1746 by Maharana Jagat Singh II, 62nd successor to the royal dynasty of Mewar, the palace still treats its guests like royalty.
