Happy Halloween: The World’s Scariest, Haunted Hotels

October 30, 2009| By:Mary Winston Nicklin

The ShiningCostume picked out? Gearing up for a Halloween costume party this weekend? If you're really looking for a scare, why not take a last-minute getaway to one of the world's freakiest haunted hotels? You may not be able to jet to England where Chillingham Castle spooks guests with its ghostly residents (sometimes overheard: "the bloodcurdling wails of Blue Boy, a child who is said to have been buried in the walls of the castle")... But North America is also brimming with haunted hotels. Here's a few: The Stanley Hotel in Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park, which was the original inspiration for Stephen King's The Shining; The Hollywood Roosevelt in L.A. where Marilyn Monroe sightings have taken place in her namesake suite; the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, where the ghost of a former bellhop sometimes helps guests with their bags; the Queen Mary, now docked in Long Beach and turned into a hotel, full of hauntings.
