Did You Know? The Rubens At The Palace

The Rubens at the PalaceBuckingham Palace Road takes its name from nearby Buckingham Palace. The Rubens At The Palace forms part of the grounds and stabling of a much earlier house on this site, once owned by John Sheffield, Earl of Mulgrave.

The Rubens at the PalaceBy 1841 the site of the present hotel was accommodating the shops of a druggist and a ham and tongue dealer named Thomas Murley. The firm of Thomas Murley & Son continued here until the mid-1880s. Their premises then passed into use as a law stationer's shop. In 1885 the site was sold and most likely redeveloped. From 1890 until about 1906 it was occupied by the Aerated Bread Company.

The Rubens at the Palace

The Rubens at the Palace, originally called the Hotel Rubens, came to life on this site in 1912.The hotel immediately became popular with debutantes and others attending functions at Buckingham Palace. During the Second World War it was taken over by General Sikorski's Free State Polish Army, which used it as its headquarters. Another statesman in exile, General Charles De Gaulle, the leader of the Free French army in exile, also stayed here during the war.

Did You Know? Dean Street Townhouse

Dean Street Townhouse

Located in the heart of London's fashionable Soho neighborhood, Dean Street Townhouse consists of a pair of Georgian residences built by carpenter John Meard in 1732-1735. Home to aristocratic families and, at one point, King Charles II’s mistress Nell Gwynne, the houses were located in Soho Fields, which gradually became a cosmopolitan centre, attracting sculptors, architects and artists, the painter William Hogarth among them.

In 1928, socialite aristocrat David Tennant founded the Gargoyle Club on the top floors of number 69, It was a well-known hangout of politicians, intellectuals, artists and entertainment royalty, including Noël Coward, Tallulah Bankhead and Fred Astaire.

The decadent and lavishly decorated club, which had Henri Matisse’s L’Atelier Rouge on one wall, went into decline by the mid 1950s, although it survived as a drinking den frequented by artists such as Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud. It enjoyed a last hurrah in 1979, when the Comedy Store took over the club, while in the basement Billy’s – then renamed Gossip’s – became a hangout for a new generation of British music stars.

Soho House took possession of the keys to numbers 69 and 70 Dean Street in 2008 and opened Dean Street Townhouse the following year.

Did You Know? The Savoy London

June 16, 2014
By: Five Star Alliance

The Savoy LondonIrish actor Richard Harris is famously known for playing Professor Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movie series. But did you know that he spent the last 12 years of his life living in Room 758 at London's ultra-luxurious Savoy Hotel

Harris reportedly liked the suite life for several reasons. Chief among them was that, unlike at home, he could order up a pint or a sandwich at 4am, if he so desired. For the privilege of late-night sandwiches, Harris paid approximately 6,000 pounds per month.

Shortly before his death from cancer, Harris was taken out of the hotel on a stretcher. According to an article in London's Daily Mail, as he went past the lobby, he shouted to the hotel guests found there that "It was the food! Don't touch the food!"

The hotel, far from taking offense at the legendary prankster's last joke, instead has named one of its Personality Suites after him. These suites are among the most spacious in the hotel and each suite has been furnished with special pieces, artwork and antiques associated with their namesake. The Art Deco style suites offer a separate sitting room, large bedroom with en-suite bathroom, separate dressing area, marble entrance foyer ,and guest cloakroom. Every Suite features a sofa, 2 armchairs and writing desk in the sitting room, a dressing table and armchair in the bedroom, personal bar, Loewe flat-screen televisions, Meridian iPod docking station, DVD player and bespoke Savoy furnishings. The well-appointed marble bathrooms all feature a freestanding, claw foot bath, separate walk-in showers with the famous Savoy rain showerhead, a double vanity, large chrome fittings and Le Labo amenities.
