Hotel Monaco Alexandria Commemorates 150th Anniversary of the Civil War

April 15, 2011| By:Mary Winston Nicklin

Hotel Monaco AlexandriaCalling all history buffs. The Hotel Monaco Alexandria- an amenity-rich boutique hotel located in historic Old Town- is commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War with some special packages so that guests can explore the region's rich past. The hotel itself is a landmark in Civil War history; it's where the first Union soldier, Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, was killed on May 24, 1861 after a fight with the secessionist innkeeper. Here's the skinny: Book the "Civil War Blue & Gray Package," priced from $150 per night, and you'll get Alexandria's "Key to the City" Pass featuring discounts on historic sites throughout the city. Or hop on one of the hotel's free bikes to explore the newly-opened Alexandria Civil War Defenses of Washington Bike Trail, which includes major stops at Fort Ward, Fort Worth, Fort Ellsworth and Alexandria National Cemetery. The hotel will throw in maps and healthy snacks if you book the "Civil War Bike Tour Package." You can also get spooked on a nighttime tour of Alexandria's historic district, following an 18th century costumed guide who'll tell ghost stories by lantern light. All packages are based on availability through 2011.
