Cool Pools: Baccarat Hotel New York

By: Five Star Alliance

Even the pool at Baccarat Hotel New York is fabulous. Crystal sconces and mirrors line the walls. A luminous wall of glass allows light to cascade between the pool and fitness area. The daybeds are inspired by the cabanas of the Cote d'Azur. The frescoed Japanese paper-covered walls have been hand-painted in India ink to evoke the forested region where Baccarat crystal is made. Renowned French artist Franccois Houtin painted the entire space from memory, using a traditional calligrapher's brush to recreate the trees that are essential to the creation of Baccarat crystal in the company factory's wood-burning ovens.

By: Five Star Alliance

The NoMad Hotel
The stunning NoMad Hotel makes its home in a fully retored turn of the century Beaux-Arts building. The hotel is intended as a fresh take on the classic grand hotels of Europe with a distinct New York sensibility. The 168 rooms are residential in feel and decorated in his classic, timeless style. The soaring ceilings throughout the public spaces provide a fine gathering place to enjoy dining, drinking, and socializing.

But there's more to The NoMad Hotel than just its good looks. The hotel has arranged for programs that enhance guest's playtime as well as bedtime. Here's a few of the exciting happenings at the hotel.

Bedtime Stories
The NoMad has partnered with Boffo, the non-profit producer of public art, and Lorin Stein, the Editor of The Paris Review. The collaboration will produce a limited edition publication of bedtime stories curated to accompany a night's stay at The NoMad Hotel. From classic to contemporary, The NoMad Bedtime Stories will focus on that twilight time between reality and dream. Slightly surreal, the stories will be imaginative windows into expansive other worlds and inner imaginations.

NoMad Upstairs

Did You Know? The Pierre Hotel New York

By: Five Star Alliance

The Pierre Hotel New York opened in 1930 at a prime site at the corner of Fifth Avenue at 61st Street, commanding unrestricted views of Central Park. Many consider the signature room of this iconic hotel to be the rotunda. The Rotunda's famous tromp l'oeil murals were created in 1967 by American artist Edward Melcarth (1914 -1973). It was his intention to bring the style and spirit of the Renaissance paintings into the present.

In the mural scenes, classic mythological figures like Neptune and Venus are intermingled with a woman with young children who resembles Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, as well as a man in a Nehru jacket, a clothing style popular in the 1960s. Other mythological figures, such as the River Gods and Minerva, share space with a young Adam & Eve (Adam was posed for by actor Erik Estrada in his younger days) and the painter's cat, Sasha. Several of the figures were modeled on people from New York society and some of the artist's patrons and benefactors. Melcarth also sculpted the male and female heads above the entrances to The Rotunda and the restaurant.
