Destination Spotlight: Amsterdam

The capital of The Netherlands, Amsterdam offers a mix of experiences set along a series of 165 waterways with 1,280 bridges. Recognized for its tall row homes built in the city's 17th century Golden Age, many of which have been transformed into hotels, boutiques, and museums, there's much to explore. Visitors can see the city from guided canal cruises along the waterways, or rent a bike to explore the its network of bike paths just like the locals.

Founded in the late 12th century as a fishing village, Amsterdam is named after the city's origin around a dam on the Amstel River. Today, the 17th century canals and the 19-20th century Defence Line of Amsterdam are designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Museum Quarter is home to the Rijksmuseum, showcasing iconic works of art from the Dutch masters including Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Frans Hals. Plus, the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum of modern art, and Concertgebouw, home of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The area is also home to the city's most famous shopping street, P.C. Hoofstraat, lined with upscale shops, boutiques, bars, and restaurants. There's also the famous Anne Frank House, and Amsterdam is home to a variety of Michelin star restaurants.

During the spring, the city is filled with blooming tulips. But there's always something to explore in the canal-filled city from art fairs to culinary events. King's Day is celebrated with parties on April 27, 2017. The LifeFit Grachtenloop on June 23, 2017 is a midsummer evening running event along Haarlem's canals, In August (8/18 - 8/27), the World Cinema Amsterdam brings indoor and outdoor screenings to the Rialto Cinema and Marie Heinekenplein. The Amsterdam In-Water Boat Show (8/29-9/3) is a festival of boating and watersports, and on September 3, the boats make way for swimmers to partake in the Amsterdam City Swim. While December is the time for Christmas markets and holiday concerts.

Amsterdam offers a variety of luxury accommodations as unique as the city itself, including Historic Retreats, Modern Boutiques, and Grand Properties. Read more below about some of the top luxury hotels in Amsterdam or Explore all Amsterdam Luxury Hotels.

The Dylan Amsterdam
The Dylan Amsterdam
hasn't always been a luxury hotel. Back in 1637, Dr. Samuel Coster, who owned the plot of land where the hotel now sits, founded a theatre in the building. Doctor Coster was greatly interested in Dutch plays and poetry and he named his theatre Duytsche Academie. To placate church authorities, who disapproved of the immoral character of the theatre, he decided to donate most of the profits to the city's orphanages.

In the following years, many Dutch plays were performed on stage, as well as works by writers such as Shakespeare, Moliere, Voltaire, and Corneille. On the 100th anniversary of the theatre, iit was Antonio Vivaldi himself who conducted the theatre’s orchestra.
