James Fawcett Bailes acquired Castleton and Ravenscourt, two farms in the area between the Sabi and Sand Rivers, in 1925, as a Private Game Reserve. The Sabi Sand region was a remote corner of the lowveld, three days hard driving from the coast, teeming with game, a raw and beautiful landscape.
In 1994, as South Africa was opening itself to the rest of the world, the Bailes family decided that the time had come to open Singita, their piece of Africa, to discerning visitors. Singita Private Game Reserve consists of 5 different lodges. Ebony Lodge And Boulders Lodge Each Have Nine Suites. Each Suite Has An Entrance Hall And Guest Toilet, A Large Private Lounge And Fireplace. The Fireplace Connects Through To A Large Bedroom Featuring A Victorian-style Bath And An Indoor And Outdoor Shower. A Dressing Area Leads Off The Bathroom. The Whole Suite Opens Onto A Large Wooden Leisure Deck And Private Swimming Pool Overlooking The Sand River. There are a number of ways to view the wildlife, from the unparalleled panorama from the viewing deck of each luxury loft, to the guided game walks and drives available at your request. The nocturnal game drives are pure enchantment, where the rare and timid creatures flitter like the wind to the thunder of the Big Five. The epitome of every stay at Singita's lodges is the luxurious care one indulges in at the health spa. Your Masseuse offers treatments from the ancient Thai massage and seaweed wraps to African hot stone therapies and head massages. Be indulged with reflexology, manicures, facials and aromatherapy. Gaze across the endless wonders of the African bush while working out in the modern fitness centre.
Guests at Singita will encounter something truly original: a cuisine inspired by African flavours yet guided by the Western culinary tradition. Complementing the menu is Singita's hidden treasure: the best bush cellar in Africa. Buried deep in the cool rock below Boulders, the cellar boasts a truly unique and comprehensive cross section of over 12,000 bottles of South African and International wines. And Singita provides the perfect environment in which to enjoy them.
