Buzzworthy: New Majestic Hotel and the Singapore Arts Festival
May 24, 2007By: Mary Winston Nicklin
New Majestic Hotel Brought to you by the same dude who opened Singapore's first boutique hotel, Hotel 1929, the uber-hip New Majestic opened last year to much fanfare. Loh Lik Peng, a lawyer-turned-hotelier, brought the boutique hotel craze to Singapore. Situated on the edge of Chinatown, the New Majestic is housed in a historic shop house, with each of the 30 guest rooms designed by a different emerging Singaporean artist. The result is floor-to-ceiling mirrors, aquarium-themed transparent bathrooms, a mix of vintage and contemporary furniture, and fantastic wall murals. The restaurant is superb; the award-winning chef Yong Bing Ngen cooks up excellent modern Cantonese cuisine in a sleek setting.

When to go? Throughout the month of June, the Singapore Arts Festival will dazzle the city with cutting-edge contemporary art-- an extravaganza of dance, music, and theater. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the Singapore Arts Festival is one of the world's leading arts festivals.
