Cool Pools: Badrutts Palace Hotel

By: Five Star Alliance

The crystal lakes and majestic peaks of the Swiss Alps inspired the 2009 renovation of the Palace Wellness Spa at Badrutts Palace Hotel. Local artisans helped craft spaces from cembran pine and San Bernadino silver into an eco-friendly space with ten treatment rooms, including a hair spa, pedicure area, solarium, body treatment wing and private spa suites, as well as saunas, steam baths, and an indoor and outdoor heated pool. In addition to Anika Organic Luxury, Intraceuticals, Shodeea and La Biosthetique products, the spa also uses organic botanicals in treatments focused on mind-body balance. Many treatments draw inspiration from Ayurvedic, Thai massage and shiatsu traditions.

Happy 150th Birthday to Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains!

By: Five Star Alliance

Happy Birthday to Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains! The historical ski resort had its first winter season in 1814-15.

Today, St. Moritz is one of the world's most famous holiday resorts. Chic, elegant and exclusive with a cosmopolitan ambiance, it is located 1,856 metres above sea level in the middle of the Upper Engadin lake landscape. But in September 1864 Swiss hotelier Johannes Badrutt was wondering how to fill his rooms during the winter. He made a bet with four English guests that if they came back at Christmas and didn't like it, he'd pay their travel costs.

The guests liked their winter stay, and the area fast became a favorite playground for the rich and famous.

By: Five Star Alliance

Kulm Hotel St Moritz

In 1864, Kulm Hotel St Moritz was a popular summer resort with British guests. Determined to make the resort a year-round destination,  founder and hotel pioneer Johannes Badrutt made a daring bet with his guests. Extolling the virtues of sunny, pleasant winter days, Badrutt promised his guests that they would enjoy being on his terrace in their shirtsleeves during this period. Badrutt offered his doubtful guests free lodging if they didn't enjoy the winter. Amazingly, Badrutt won the bet. The British guests were so happy many of them stayed until Springtime, even going home with a suntan.
