Oahu

We recommend starting your journey on the island of Oahu, home of the Honolulu International Airport with nonstop flights arriving daily from around the world. Explore the cosmopolitan city, walk along Waikiki Beach, hike atop Leahi (Diamond Head), and visit the Pearl Harbor Memorial. To experience a laid back surf town, take about a one-hour drive to Haleiwa, on the island's North Shore, where visitors can experience the island's history, dine in restaurants set within former plantation buildings, browse charming art galleries, and shop surfing boutiques. For kayaking, parasailing, windsurfing, and bodyboarding, head to Kailua Beach Park on the Windward Coast. Known for white sand and turquoise water, it's an ideal spot for exploring. Nearby Kailua Town offers a range of restaurants, including Island Snow, serving shave ice treats and frequented by the Obama family.

Maui

Next, hop a flight to the island of Maui. Referred to as the "Valley Isle," Maui offers a taste of the island's locally sourced cuisine, artist communities, and charming towns. The island is also known for whale watching, and it is located withing the Hawaiian Islands Humpack Whale National Marine Sanctuary. From January to April, Lahaina Harbor offers a wide range of whale watching tours, along with historic attractions from the whaling village's past. For a historical and botanical experience, head to the Iao Valley State Park to see the monument where Kamehameha defeated the Maui army in 1790, and walk the Iao Needle Lookout Trail and Ethnobotanical Loop to learn about the flora that Hawaiians brought to the island. For scenic views, Haleakala National Park is home to the island's highest peak, and Kaanapali Beach offers signature Hawaiian sunsets. Turtle Bay ResortTurtle Bay Resort is renowned as the only resort destination on Oahu's Fabled North Shore. The location is a flashpoint of global surfing, and the hotel plays host to the legendary Hans Hedemann Surf Center.

Given the hotel's close connection to surfing, the luxury beach hotel has paired up with Surfer the magazine to launch Surfer the Bar. Surfer is a partnership between Turtle Bay and Surfer magazine, the global bible of surfing culture. The drink of choice here is a 16-ounce pint of ice-cold beer, many of them local small-batch brews. The food is fresh, flavorful, sometimes spicy Hawaiian comfort food.

Surfer the bar has a stage for Hawaiian musicianship. In addition to scheduled performers, Surfer has quickly become a showcase for new talent as well as a platform for surprising, impromptu performances by celebrity musicians who like the Surfer vibe.Turtle Bay Resort Surfer the bar is also a screening room for international and local Big Wave filmmakers, documentarians and photographers who consider Surfer to be the perfect venue for sharing their craft with an appreciative audience who want to see the beauty, majesty and danger of the sea through the eyes of those who know it best.  It is a studio for live webcasting of some of surfing’s biggest pro events and up-close-and-personal musical concerts. It is also a soapbox for TalkStory, a centuries-old Hawaiian tradition roughly meaning "to converse informally and openly as good friends do."

Even if you've never caught a wave, spend enough time at Surfer the bar and you'll feel as if you are a hanging ten hero.

Halekulani has been hosting visitors to Waikiki Beach for nearly 100 years, but even the most hip and trendy luxury hotels need a face lift every now and then. This beautiful Hawaiian hotel has earned its reputation for its gracious hospitality, impeccable service, and incredible cuisine, and with its updates, the Halekulani is now that much more stunning and reputable. For the past year, the Halekulani has been sprucing all of its rooms and suites as well as enhancing guest experiences, services, and amenities. The hotel has also added a new French Bar, L’Aperitif at La Mer, and a new Afternoon Tea experience. Each guestroom has been improved with new furnishings, accessories, amenities, new lighting design, bedding, and enhanced in-room technology. We simply love the new look and feel of the Halekulani and admire how a stunning property can undergo a major improvement period without losing its historic and charming feel. Explore the new look of the Halekulani for yourself and let us know what you think!

Recently the hotel lifestyle got quite the shout-out in the New York Times. Guy Trebay offers an insightful look at the experience of being a frequent traveler and the allure of luxury hotels as well as the simple charm of a roadside motel. It’s part story of a lifetime of travel and part examination of the the at-home feeling of otherness we all feel as strangers temporarily filling up an empty space with our lives. The transience of a hotel room, coupled with the fake familiarity of its wait staff is both welcoming and fleeting, like a summer romance. He gives special mention of a few hotels with which he’s shared the remarkable journey: Claridge’s, Halekulani, the various Raffles hotels, the Grand Hotel d’Angkor. It’s certainly well worth a read – he understands well the mind of the restless traveler, at home in impermanence, on the vacation that is so beautiful precisely because it is stepping out of your life.
