Grande Colonial Hotel La Jolla's executive chef Jason Knibb was recently named San Diego's "Chef of the Year" by the California Restaurant Association. The historic luxury hotel's NINE-TEN restaurant was also awarded "Best Hotel Restaurant/Fine Dining." Both awards were presented at the 30th annual Gold Medallion Awards dinner.
Knibb joined the staff of the Grande Colonial more than ten years ago. A self-trained chef, he discovered a love of cooking when he was a 17 year old busboy at a local restaurant. He trained under some of the country's finest chefs including Wolfgang Puck, Roy Yamaguchi, and Hans Rockenwagner.
A recognized name in culinary circles across the country and universally acknowledged to be among the top chefs in Southern California for his consistently exquisite food and artistic presentations, Jason has amassed many awards and accolades for his style and cuisine. Most notably: Zagat Survey® Food Score of 26 (extraordinary to perfection); Zagat Top 10 Restaurants in San Diego; and a 2010 Rising Star Chef Winner/StarChefs. In November of 2011, he was also a contender on the Food Network’s Iron Chef, battling Bobby Flay in a seafood showdown, marking yet another significant milestone in his culinary career.
Situated in the seaside village of La Jolla, just 15 minutes from San Diego, the Grande Colonial offers classic European styling in the intimate setting of a boutique hotel. Commanding views of the coastline, this Centurion hotel is steps from miles of beaches and world-class shopping, dining & entertainment. Its award-winning NINE-TEN Restaurant offers the perfect combination of sophistication and casual elegance. Hotel Prince de Galles was built in 1928 and was inspired by the style of the Decorative Arts exhibition of 1925. With a classical yet modern frontage and a magnificent patio in mosaic, the hotel Prince de Galles owes its name to its original aim: to welcome to Paris during his annual stays, the Prince of Wales, future Edward VIII, son of the king of England George V. Other famous guests include Winston Churchill, Lord Chamberlain, Marlene Dietrich, Elvis Presley, Lana Turner, and Gina Lollobrigida. Buckingham Palace Road takes its name from nearby Buckingham Palace. The Rubens At The Palace forms part of the grounds and stabling of a much earlier house on this site, once owned by John Sheffield, Earl of Mulgrave.
By 1841 the site of the present hotel was accommodating the shops of a druggist and a ham and tongue dealer named Thomas Murley. The firm of Thomas Murley & Son continued here until the mid-1880s. Their premises then passed into use as a law stationer's shop. In 1885 the site was sold and most likely redeveloped. From 1890 until about 1906 it was occupied by the Aerated Bread Company.
The Rubens at the Palace, originally called the Hotel Rubens, came to life on this site in 1912.The hotel immediately became popular with debutantes and others attending functions at Buckingham Palace. During the Second World War it was taken over by General Sikorski's Free State Polish Army, which used it as its headquarters. Another statesman in exile, General Charles De Gaulle, the leader of the Free French army in exile, also stayed here during the war.
