Sustainability and Six Senses Laamu

Six Senses Laamu
Six Senses Laamu

wants the earth to have as good an experience at their resort as the guests do. The luxury resort is committed to reducing its ecological and carbon footprint.

Here's a few of the green initiatives at the resort:

- All villas have been designed to take advantage of passive cooling and overhanging roofs creates shade for the windows, thus reducing the need for air-conditioning. Where air-conditioning is required, only low energy units are used.

- Freshwater production works through reverse-osmosis desalination, whereby pressurised seawater is filtered via a semi-permeable membrane – an energy-intense operation. To reduce this energy consumption, an innovative energy recovery system (ERI) uses the brine’s energy to pressurise seawater to the same pressure as the brine. This installation makes the desalination process much more efficient.

- Suppliers are asked to reduce packaging when delivering supplies.

- Printing paper is eco-labelled or recycled and the reverse side of printed paper is used for notes.

- Guests are given re-usable glass water bottles rather than disposable plastic bottles.

- A recycling corner where waste is separated into paper, plastic, metal, glass, organic waste, and toxic waste. A compactor reduces the space required to store the waste before it is sent for recycling and proper handling.

- A composting site takes food waste from the kitchen and restaurants composts it with garden waste. The composting soil generated from this activity is reused in our landscape and gardening.

By: Five Star Alliance

Loch Torridon is set in 58 acres of parkland at the end of a magnificent sea loch, The Torridon has one of the most spectacular and idyllic locations in the country. Explore some of the surrounding countryside by taking part in the fourth annual Torridon Walking Festival, which takes the weekend of October 11th – 13th, 2014.

Loch Torridon

The event takes in some of the North West Highlands finest Munros, including Torridon's famous three: Liathach, Beinn Eighe and Ben Alligin. A Munro is is a mountain in Scotland with a height over 3,000 feet. As well as climbing the big three, there are other classic Munros, including Maol Chean Dearg and Slioch, located in the area. The weekend kicks off with the ascent and the classic traverse of the famous Liathach ridge.
Loch Torridon

The high level walks are aimed at people that are used to the mountain environment and as such will have a reasonable level of fitness. The walks will be visiting wild places and will not necessarily follow footpaths. Conditions underfoot, coupled with the terrain; dictate that these walks are of a medium to strenuous nature. All activities involve a degree of physical input and as such any aches, pains weaknesses or concerns need to be advised to the guide at the start of the day and to The Torridon before the festival.

Low level walks will follow estate roads and footpaths with easy height gain but a reasonable level of fitness is still recommended.

Campo Bahia Opens...But Only if You are on the German National Soccer Team

June 12, 2014
By: Five Star Alliance

World Cup fever has hit worldwide! Brazil is playing host this time around, and one lucky team has gotten the VIP treatment at a brand-new luxury resort. The resort is currently the accommodation for the German Football Team during the World Cup 2014.

Situated in the village of Santo André in the state of Bahia, the sport and nature Campo Bahia resort covers 15,000 square metres and contains 14 two-story houses with a total of 65 residential units. Campo Bahia is very close to Santa Cruz Cabrália, where Portuguese seafarer Pedro Álvares Cabral landed when he first discovered Brazil in 1500.  The resort has been built with careful attention to sustainability and the natural environment. The materials used in construction were sourced locally, while the trees which had to be removed were transplanted rather than chopped down.

Constructing these facilities has been a boost to lasting infrastructural development in the Santo André and Santa Cruz Cabrália area. The effects include the establishment of long-term skilled jobs – in the catering and hotel sectors, for example – and the integration of the local communities and the Pataxó Indian reserve. The whole project is based on the principles of responsible tourism, eco-friendliness and sustainability.

In addition to providing luxury accommodations to the soccer players, the hotel has asked seven Brazilian and seven German artists to create works of art for the buildings and the surrounding area. The artists selected for this task were chosen for their engagement with issues of cultural and social identity.

After the World Cup, the resort will open for booking for guests who don't happen to play professional football.
