Featured Journeys: California Wine Country

From rolling vineyards to tasting rooms, to picnics amongst the vines, a vineyard vacation offers a relaxing, and perhaps romantic retreat. In this edition of Featured Journeys we're heading to Northern California's Wine Country with a multi-stop itinerary to Sonoma, Napa, and Monterey.

There's a variety of airport options for this trip. Travelers could choose to fly roundtrip to San Francisco International, or another option would be to fly into Charles M. Schulz - Sonoma County Aiport (STS) and fly out of the Monterey Regional Airport (MRY). Regardless the itinerary, the drive between each stop is sure to provide panoramic scenery.

Sonoma

Situated about 45 minutes north of San Francisco, Sonoma County offers a genuine wine country experience, with 76% of tourism businesses being small businesses, and 91% percent of the tourism businesses are locally-owned. This area is all about local cuisine, local growers, and of course, local wines. The area has a thriving art and food scene, and there's an array of outdoor opportunities like exploring the redwoods, hot air balooning, and vineyard hikes. Love the Peanuts Gang? A visit to this region wouldn't be complete without a trip to the Charles M. Schulz Museum with a collection dedicated to providing an in-depth look into the life and legacy of Peanuts comic strip creator, Charles M. Schulz.

Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn is located on the former site of Boyes Hot Springs Hotel. Native Americans who were the first to discover the natural underground hot mineral waters here. This site was considered a sacred healing ground. In 1923, a disastrous fire destroyed the hotel and most of Boyes Hot Springs. However, in 1927, the current Inn rose from the ashes as an architecturally accurate replica of a California Mission. Once again, the Inn was filled with guests, and this unique hot springs resort was hailed as one of the finest in all of Northern California. In 1980, major renovation returned the Inn to its 1920's grandeur, and the Spa, added in 1981, attracted visitors from around the globe. Since then, the most recent additions and renovations, began in 1999 and completed in 2000, include the expansion of the Spa, to its 40,000 sq.ft. indoor and outdoor space, beautifully appointed, lush landscaping making this a true European Spa.

It's not every day that an infographic so awesome comes around.  Over at Cheap Sally, an online discount site, their travel experts have aggregated a list of some of the wildest hotel and vacation sites in the US, and it features some of our favorite US properties.  For the whole list, check out the infographic below, but I'd like to highlight some of our favorites.

Long at the top of our list of the Best Luxury All-Inclusive Resorts in the world, The Point at Saranac Lake, NY, is so exclusive, you aren't told where exactly on the pristine Adirondack lake it is until you've confirmed your reservation.  Complete with a 3-star Michelin chef and only 11 rooms on the property, you are guaranteed to experience a personalized, secluded stay in one of the world's most elite properties.

In terms of crazy spa treatments, it's hard to top the over 250-gallon Evian bath only available in the penthouse suite of the Hotel Victor on Miami Beach.  This spa treatment costs only slightly less than the suite itself and features a bath of pure Evian water sprinkled with rose petals.

But if you're like me and you like your baths with a little more kick to them, then the Kenwood Inn and Spa vinotherapy treatment is just what you're looking for:  Bathe in wine and grape seed extract to soak your skin in the antioxidant polyphenol which powerfully slows the aging of skin.  You'll come out looking and feeling younger than even a couple glasses of the same wine would make you feel.

There's a just a few of the wonderful and crazy hotels and spas located around the US, and you can some more great examples below.  Make sure to check out Five Star Alliance to book these great destinations or if you're looking for a deal or digital coupon for any of over 11,000 retailers, Cheap Sally is your girl.
