Destination Spotlight: Macao

In light of the news of Typhoon Hato, our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Macao and all of those affected by the tragic storm. Macao and its residents offer a beautifully diverse destination, which is why we selected it in our editorial calendar as this month’s Destination Spotlight. Five Star Alliance sends our condolences to those who have lost loved ones, and well wishes for all those impacted.

Mixing Chinese and Portuguese traditions, Macao (Macau in Portuguese) offers an eclectic combination of classic Portuguese, ancient Chinese, and modern Western styles and cultures, along with international shopping, casinos, and nightlife. For almost 500 years, Macao was a Portuguese territory, and in 1999, Macao became a Special Administration Region of China. Easily reachable by direct flights from the U.S., Macao is located just 35 minutes from Hong Kong. Considered Asia's Las Vegas, the area offers a unique East meets West destination.

Visitors can choose from a variety of attractions, including the Historic Centre of Macao, one of Macao's 25 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. There's meandering streets with Portuguese colonial-style buildings, Buddhist and Taoist Temples amidst Christian Churches, lush gardens, beaches, fortresses, and parks. For museums, there's everything from he history of wine to ancient Chinese art, and no trip to Macao is complete without a trip The House of Dancing Waters--a water show spectacular with aquatic acrobats. Feeling adventurous? Try the world's highest commercial bungee jump. Plus, the Cotai Strip with Vegas-like casinos, resorts, shopping, and entertainment.

Home to 19 Michelin-starred restaurants as well as Michelin-mentioned street foods, Macao is ideal for foodies and gourmands. An international mix of cuisines can be found throughout the area, but visitors should be sure to try Macanese cuisine which combines ingredients from around the world, and paired with Portuguese wines.

Throughout the year Macao hosts a variety of events, including the longest running Grand Prix and the Dragon Boat Festival. In late September to early October, the Macao Fireworks Display Contest lights up the sky with nightly international firework displays, and the Macao Food Festival is held in November. There's also the Light Festival and International Film Festival in December.

To compliment Macao's attractions, Michelin restaurants, and cultural experiences, Five Star Alliance offers a selection of luxury hotels that will appeal to a range of travelers including Downtown Properties, Cotai Strip Resorts, and Stylish Retreats.

Honolulu - Places to go 2017

Emerging as the arts hub of the Hawaiian islands, the state's capital is hosting its first Biennial, March 8 to May 8, which will feature art installations, performances, and more around the city at the City Hall, Chinatown, and Foster Botanical Garden. There are new galleries and studios opening throughout the city, plus the beachfront hotels are right on the water, yet close to the attractions. Halekulani is located on Waikiki Beach with the 5-star Le Mer Restaurant and a mosaic-bottom swimming pool. The newly transformed Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina is a sprawling property with an award-winning spa, marina, and family activities. Plus, the Royal Hawaiian, known as the Pink Palace provides a landmark setting on Waikiki Beach with classic beachfront dining.

Set on the southern tip of the island of Bali, the Four Seasons Bali Jimbaran Bay is an oceanfront luxury resort. Designed as a traditional Balinese village, the property offers a range of amenities including cultural tours, Jimba Kids' Club, Balinese dance performances, Sunrise & Surya Yoga, plus kayaking and catamaran cruises on Jimbaran Bay. Long before Bali became known primarily for its beach parties, this Indonesian island was a quiet artists' community, and still retains a vibrant arts scene. It's a quieter side of Bali that the Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay resort is hoping to channel with a new set of traditional villas and the establishment of the Ganesha Cultural Centre, a showplace for traditional art, crafts, and music.

In a setting reminiscent of a Balinese village, the resort's new two-bedroom, Jimbaran Bay, and Premier villas are built from locally sourced materials, from wood floors to thatched roofs. Each villa is also decorated with original artwork, and bedrooms abut a common living area that flows into the sundeck with a pool and outdoor dining area, the latter set on a cliff's edge.

Luxury Travel Advisor thinks the redo at the Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay will appeal to VIPs seeking a more authentic Bali experience — or at least a trip that doesn’t focus on partying until dawn. The destination, of course, offers plenty of opportunities to engage in Balinese culture, from visiting the Tanah Lot temple on its narrow perch above the sea to browsing the stalls in the Ubud Art Market. The Ganesha Cultural Centre, located on the resort grounds, expands the former Ganesha Gallery by adding hands-on learning programs to the static displays.

“We believe it is our responsibility, as well as our honor, to give guests the opportunity to personally meet and learn from Bali’s talented artists, who are hand-picked and invited to share their knowledge and skills,” said Uday Rao, general manager of Four Seasons Resorts Bali, in a written release.
For example, guests can take lessons in woodcarving, weaving, painting, and dancing, and learn the proper way to make offerings at Balinese ceremonies. The Jimbaran Bay resort also has a Balinese cooking academy, an on-site Hindu temple, and a cultural immersion program that includes tours led by a resident Balinese priest.
