Bees Get Busy at Waldorf Astoria New York

August 5, 2013| By:K. Clare Johnson

Waldorf Astoria New York

Waldorf Astoria New York is known for being one of Manhattan's most elegant Park Avenue hotels. But it's also one of the buzziest places in town, thanks to their rooftop bee colony. The hotel has 6 hives which have a total of 300,000 bees. The hives are located on a 20th floor terrace.

The bees at the Waldorf Astoria New York have been as busy as, well, bees this year! The luxury hotel is very proud to announce that they have gotten 207 pounds of honey from their first harvest alone. That far outpaces the 125 pounds collected from 3 harvests last year.

The bee-keeping idea can be credited to David Garcelone, the hotel's culinary director. The honey is incorporated into the menu at the hotels and there are plans to sell the honey to guests.
