Built in 1929, the King David Hotel Jerusalem has played an important role in the history of Israel and Jerusalem. It was founded by Ezra Mosseri, a wealthy Egyptian Jewish banker. It was the site of a bombing in 1946, by the right-wing Zionist underground organization the Irgun, on the British administrative headquarters for Palestine, which was housed in hotel. It has long been popular among visiting dignitaries, politicians, government officials, and celebrities. Famous guests include Hillary Clinton, Madonna, Barack Obama, and Richard Gere.
