Pet Airways: Pamper Rex with First-Class Travel on the World’s First Pet-Only Airline

April 21, 2009
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

Pet AirwaysDon't relegate Rex to the cargo hold. With Pet Airways, your furry friend can get VIP treatment in the main cabin on a pet-only airline. But pets prone to separation anxiety may not be wholly satisfied with this unique travel arrangement; owners can't accompany their animals on the aircraft. Still, from the looks of the Facebook fan page, $149 fares are getting snatched up for the airline's July 2009 launch. Proof perhaps that the pet industry is recession-proof.

Pet Pampering at The Peninsula Beverly Hills

November 26, 2008
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

Peninsula Beverly HillsThe five-star treatment is not limited to human guests at The Peninsula Beverly Hills. The award-winning hotel, which recently unveiled its glamorous Roof Garden and Pool after a stunning makeover, spoils four-legged guests as much as their owners. For pet-obsessed Americans, it's important that their hotels are pet-friendly, offering amenities just for Fido. Travel + Leisure talked up these "outrageous hotel perks for pets" in a recent article:

Gunny, a devoted Peninsula Beverly Hills guest, often visits the posh hotel, and the staff joyously greets him as he strides along the lobby's marble floor. Retiring to his room, Gunny finds a specially monogrammed towel beside his Simmons Beauty Rest mattress (covered in 300-thread-count sheets) and sits down to a grilled New York sirloin and scrambled eggs with aged Tillamook cheddar on bone china. And when he needs styling, the hotel's Rolls Royce shuttles him to the salon. All pretty normal for a 5-star hotel-- except Gunny is a golden retriever. "Like their owners, pets should have a chance to get away from their normal routine," said the hotel's chef concierge, James Little.

Flying With Fido

February 15, 2007
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

FidoAccording to the US Department of Transportation, there are more than half-million pets which fly each year. But navigating the rules and regs for flying with Fido can be tricky. Which airlines boycott pugs? When are fees required? Which airlines ban pets from the cabin? What if Fido needs his Prozac? CNN's got the skinny, with a list of helpful hints about the different airline policies. A sampling: pets must be considered "healthy" (with health certificates sometimes required to prove it), Southwest bans pets altogether while American and Northwest charge $80 for pets to fly in the cabin, and of course, no snakes are allowed on the plane. (Tip: "Do not feed or give water to your pet two hours before departure.")
