I have a special place in my heart for tiny boutique hotels. It may be a little smaller than some of the other chambers, and there aren't enough spots for everybody, but that just makes the few who do make their way into my good graces all the more special. I can give each and every one the loving care and attention they deserve. And thus began my new segment on boutique hotels that I just adore.
I have been spotlighting a lot of cutting edge designer hotels lately. There is another side of boutique hotel with a perfectly American flavor that is not represented in this group. The small boutique hotel can also be a down-home experience that mimics the classical elegance of the old-school inn and upscale roadhouse. The Inn at the Presidio is just that, a 22-room house that gives the impression that San Francisco was built around it, though that is not to say that it appears in any way dated. In fact, given that description, you would never expect that the Inn at the Presidio is as freshly minted as they come, opening just in April of this year.
The interior spaces are slick and well-crafted, bringing the American Inn into the 21st century. The Inn at the Presidio is what a classic inn would be if it were opened in 2012, rather than a preservation of antique furniture. Most importantly, the privileged position afforded the Inn, right by the waterfront, means that third floor rooms boast a breathtaking view of the Golden Gate Bridge. The one-bedroom suites that make up the bulk of the rooms offer a separate sitting area and gas fireplace alongside the standard bedroom. While the Inn at the Presidio certainly couldn't accommodate gold rush numbers, that only enhances its charm, and you would do well to give it a gander next time you're heading westward.

It's a hallmark occasion coming up in about a month for the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. May 27th marks the 75th anniversary of the bridge's construction, and times will be hopping in the Bay Area. The Cavallo Point Lodge is making a point to celebrate in style over the weekend with a Terrace Party and Gala Dinner. If you're looking to be in San Francisco, the hotel is the perfect place to celebrate. A breathtaking view of the bridge from the terrace is a wonderful place for a party to commemorate one of the crowning engineering achievements in the United States.
Cavallo Point has some great rooms and suites available for the weekend, and some are even original officer's residences from historic Fort Baker and have wonderful skyline views. You can also, of course, stay in any of our other fantastic San Francisco hotels. Just be sure to make it out to the bridge while you're there.

A tip for travelers to San Francisco this week: Ghirardelli Square will be hosting the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on Black Friday, November 25. After feasting on Thanksgiving turkey and all the fixings, celebrate the beginning of the holiday season with some festive merry-making (and lots of Ghiradelli Peppermint Bark Squares!) in San Francisco's Ghirardelli Square. The whole family will enjoy the free, live entertainment throughout the day- with performances by the San Francisco City Opera, Contra Coastal Chorale and Yuletide Carolers. It all culminates with the lighting of the Ghirardelli Square tree at 5:30 pm.
Psst. Lola Toy Stop will be offering a small gift for each child visiting the toy stop during The 47th Ghirardelli Square Tree Lighting Ceremony! In addition to sampling your fair share of complimentary Ghiradelli chocolate squares, we suggest indulging in their world-famous hot chocolate, too.

This just in. We've found unbelievably low rates for the holiday period in San Francisco. Needless to say, we don't often see prices like this at four-star hotels in the City by the Bay. We're talking $135 per night when you reserve seven days in advance at the Westin San Francisco Market Street. But we say book today to ensure availability! Valid for stays from November 20-27 and December 2, 3, 11, 15-18 and 22-29. That's not all. When you stay two nights- and if you're a Facebook friend and Twitter follower of the hotel- you'll get a free upgrade to the next room category. Located in SOMA (the South of Market district), the hotel offers spectacular views of the city from floor-to-ceiling windows in every guest room. Plus, Westin Heavenly Beds and Heavenly Bath, flat-screen TVs, and High Speed Internet Access to make you feel right at home.

There's no shortage of excellent restaurants in SF. And now we're hearing about a new, farm-to-table eatery that could give them all a run for the money. Located in the posh W Hotel, Trace restaurant opened on September 5 to much fanfare. Its mission? To quote the official website: "TRACE is committed to fusing the vibrant, local personality of the Bay Area with a dedication to socially responsible food prepared from locally sourced and sustainable ingredients, led by Executive Chef Paul Piscopo and Executive Sous Chef Alaun Grimaud." Daily Candy sings its praises: "Upscale food styling elevates already-satisfying small plates and entrees like homemade ravioli with summer squash and grilled rib-eye with pillowy gnocchi and lobster mushrooms." And Eater SF has some swell photos of Stanley Saitowitz’s interior architectural design. This being the W, there's a happening bar and lounge scene, to boot.
