Salamander Resort & Spa, set on over 300 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains amid Virginia's famed horse country and lush vineyards announced that it is set to open this August. Located in the 18th century village of Middleburg, Salamander Resort is 30 minutes west of Dulles International Airport and an hour from downtown Washington, DC.
Set on 340 acres of farmland, the brand new resort will offer what was said to be "an unparalleled luxury experience in the region" with 168 guest rooms and suites; a culinary program led by Chef Todd Gray of Equinox Restaurant in DC including two restaurants, wine bar, cooking studio and two-acre culinary garden; a spa with 14 treatment rooms and a couples suite; and various activities including an onsite Equestrian program, with a 22-stall barn, practice ring, riding trails and instructional classes.
The property similarly boasts tennis courts and an outdoor pool complex, and guests have privileges at the nearby Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. Fifty wineries are within an hour's drive of the resort, as are opportunities for whitewater rafting, sporting clays and raceway spectating.
Salamander Resort is also eyeing to be a destination for meetings or events. The property features a 5,000 square foot Grand Ballroom, as well as more intimate settings including a 1,800 square foot Junior Ballroom, Executive Boardrooms and breakout rooms, hospitality suites and 2,000 square foot Presidential Suite with an entertainment balcony.
Indoor and outdoor event facilities at Salamander are eyed to make events stand out, including the Equestrian Barn event room, the Stallion Barn, a, over a hundred year old stone building adjacent to the Grand Lawn, and the Cooking Studio, which may be reserved by groups for private events.
Five Star Alliance's sister publication, Travel Agent, recently wrote an article about the recently re-vamped Pardisus Cancun.
Travel Agent visited Paradisus Cancun in January, following its reopening and rebranding on December 1. Before, the resort operated as a Gran Melia, but has since been repurposed as a Paradisus, Melia's luxury all-inclusive brand.
The resort offers guests six restaurants and three bars, several pools, a YHI Spa, golf course and more. Paradisus Cancun is also home to the specialty Royal Service, a private enclave of rooms that are adults-only, and come with their own set of privileges. Those who book four nights in the Royal Service section receive an included meal at Tempo. Royal Service guests also have access to the YHI Spa's hydrotherapy suite without having a treatment scheduled. A private pool and beach section is also available for guests of Royal Service. The resort offers a selection of Life Enriching experiences to help bring guests closer to the culture of Mexico and Cancun. We participated in a tequila tasting with the resort's sommelier. Guests can also opt for experiences like massage classes, DJ lessons and more.
Guests will want to stay in the Deluxe Royal Service Ocean Front rooms, which are the most requested accommodations. However, if you are looking for something even more over-the-top, say for a CEO, for example, the Presidential and Government Suites are best. All rooms in the Royal Service section entitle guests to private butler service.
Getting there: Cancun International Airport is just 25 minutes away. The concierge can arrange anything from a town car or limo to Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Mercedes Benz SLS. If guests want to land a private helicopter, Cancun's airport can accommodate.
The YHI Spa is a great place to unwind. There are 11 treatment rooms in the 4,900-square-foot space (six regular rooms and five eco rooms; three are for couples). Reservations are taken starting a month in advance but it is best to book at least 24 hours out. Try the Ix-Chel Holistic massage.
The resort features a 'pitch and put' golf course on the grounds. If guests want something a little more exclusive, the resort can arrange for a golf pro to come to the property for a private golf clinic.

Richard Kessler's Kessler Collection of hotels has a grand vision for remaking the west end of Savannah, Georgia's River Street.
The hotel developer and Savannah native unveiled his preliminary plans for the Plant Riverside site Thursday during a Savannah City Council workshop. The Grand Bohemian at Historic Power Plant will anchor the $100 million-plus redevelopment of the waterfront property, which straddles the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and River Street.
Redevelopment of the site, which Kessler bought for $9 million on New Year’s Eve, won’t begin for at least a year. Construction will take between 18 months and two years, meaning the hotel will open no earlier than 2016.
The 160-room Grand Bohemian is just one piece of the project. The hotel will be housed in the historic power plant, along with a café, a restaurant and bar, a 3,500-seat ballroom, a 3,000-square-foot art gallery and other upscale retail.
Kessler proposes to build a combination exhibition hall/parking garage to the west of the power plant along the riverfront. The cleared lot east of the power plant, which once was home to the transformer farm, initially will be converted to a grassed plaza and reserved for future development.
Kessler’s project was warmly received by council, a testament to the success of his past development work in Savannah. The Grand Bohemian will be the seventh hotel he’s built in the Historic District since launching his development career in 1970.

We’re just back from St. Barth where we spent a lovely afternoon at Hotel St. Barth Isle de France
. The resort, which is a member of the Oetker Collection (think Le Bristol Paris
, Hôtel du Cap Eden-Roc and the Palais Namaskar
in Marrakech, Morocco), is a true jetset venue. Since it’s a mere five-minute drive from the airport, you can don your flip-flops and be sipping Sauvignon Blanc on Flamand Beach in no time as you’re still shaking off your cold weather blues.
When you arrive, you’ll get the vibe that everything at Hotel St. Barth Isle de France is pure white against a blue, blue sea. And it is white and fresh, thanks in large part to a recent renovation to its garden bungalows and public areas. We were able to get a good walk-through to one of the just-turned-two Flamands Villas (No. 43). There are two of these enormous three-bedroom suites which measure 4,300 square feet in size. Smart Move: Each of the bedrooms is of equal size, with a private bath, so there’s no stress about divvying up the sleeping quarters if you’re sharing with other couples or on a girlfriend getaway. More good things: Bathrooms have double sinks and roomy tubs. Both suites as well have full, real working kitchens near their respective living rooms, which open up to a terrace, complete with a plunge infinity pool overlooking the Caribbean and they have direct access to the beach. Other lush touches? Each has an exercise room and a home cinema. Life is good.
If a Flamands Villa isn’t large enough for your special party, consider adding on a suite next door, which measures 1,300 square feet.
What we loved: Lunch at the alfresco La Case de l’Isle overlooking the sea is a must, even if you’re just in town for the day off a luxury cruise. The menu is simple and French and the crowd that gathers is cosmopolitan and international and usually quite tan and fashionable. We started off with the refreshing soupe glacée de petits pois, bruschetta de prosciutto et poivrons grilles, which is an iced pea soup served with a prosciutto ham, and grilled peppers bruschetta. For a unique dish to share with your dining companion, consider the “Wok de gambas et poulet marine,” which is a shrimp and marinated chicken wok dish served with Thai noodles. (P.S.: A continental breakfast is included in the room rate.)
The spa here has four treatment rooms and uses Natura Bissé and Intraceuticals skincare products. There’s also a Spa Pavilion set in the resort’s tropical gardens.
