Green Hotels: Viceroy Snowmass Has Rates from $100 this Spring

March 1, 2011
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

Viceroy SnowmassHow do we love the Viceroy Snowmass? Let us count the ways. There's the Ute Indian-inspired wellness spa. The all-season heated saline pool, terrace with cabanas, Nest lounge and café designed by Kelly Wearstler. The helpful ski valet with on-site ski and snowboard rental. And the kick-ass slopeside location in the heart of Snowmass' new Base Village just seven miles from downtown Aspen. But perhaps most importantly: the hotel is eco-friendly. Outside Magazine has the deets:

More and more ski resorts are going green-- meaning you can feel good about living it up. In Colorado's recently renovated Snowmass village, the year-old Snowmass Viceroy offers 173 luxe rooms and a sprawling spa complex. But thanks to smart construction (think low-flow faucets and high-efficiency heating systems) as well as gaudy extras like an electric-car charging station, the lodge is up for LEED Silver certification. Roll up in your hybrid and parking's free.

Hot deal: Viceroy Snowmass has "Linger Longer Rates" starting at $100 per night from May 26, 2011. The ski season may be over by then, but you'll be privy to fantastic weather and gorgeous Rocky Mountain views.

The $6.6-Million Birthday Party in Courchevel, France

December 20, 2010
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

Hotel de Charme Les Airelles, Courchevel, FranceHe flew in the "master of Gallic gastronomy," Alain Ducasse, to prepare the victuals for some 300 guests from all over the world. Those guests got to see a show by Cirque du Soleil, whose performers were brought in from Canada, followed by a fireworks display. Viktor Pinchuk's $6.6 million birthday party in the French ski resort of Courchevel is already notorious. Over the weekend the Ukrainian billionaire-- listed by Time magazine as one of the world's 100 most influential people-- dropped a pretty penny to fete his special day. Not bad for a 50th birthday bash!

Pictured: The Hôtel de Charme Les Airelles, one of Courchevel's five-star hotels, provides access to the biggest skiing area in the world, Les 3 Vallées.

Gingerbread Extravaganza at Stein Eriksen Lodge (Harry Potter’s Hogwarts!)

December 6, 2010
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

Stein Eriksen LodgePark City's Stein Eriksen Lodge knows how to get primped for the holidays. The lobby gets a 32-foot tree that's decked with lavish ornaments, and the pastry chef assembles a team to make an awe-inspiring gingerbread creation. One year they concocted an Empire State Building out of gingerbread; another year, they made a nine-foot long and five-foot tall Thomas the Train. This year's marvel? Straight out of Harry Potter- the fictional Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Made with 400 pounds of gingerbread and 80 pounds of icing, the gingerbread Hogwarts required 150 hours of creation time by Executive Pastry Chef Ann Giles Sweisford and her team. Planning to ski Park City's Deer Valley Resort this winter? The Stein Eriksen Lodge has a sweet package deal called "Bronze, Stay & Ski" that includes lift tickets, lodging, and a bountiful breakfast from $279 per person. (Note: not available over Christmas.)
