June 17, 2014
By: Five Star Alliance

Loch Torridon is set in 58 acres of parkland at the end of a magnificent sea loch, The Torridon has one of the most spectacular and idyllic locations in the country. Explore some of the surrounding countryside by taking part in the fourth annual Torridon Walking Festival, which takes the weekend of October 11th – 13th, 2014.

Loch Torridon

The event takes in some of the North West Highlands finest Munros, including Torridon's famous three: Liathach, Beinn Eighe and Ben Alligin. A Munro is is a mountain in Scotland with a height over 3,000 feet. As well as climbing the big three, there are other classic Munros, including Maol Chean Dearg and Slioch, located in the area. The weekend kicks off with the ascent and the classic traverse of the famous Liathach ridge.
Loch Torridon

The high level walks are aimed at people that are used to the mountain environment and as such will have a reasonable level of fitness. The walks will be visiting wild places and will not necessarily follow footpaths. Conditions underfoot, coupled with the terrain; dictate that these walks are of a medium to strenuous nature. All activities involve a degree of physical input and as such any aches, pains weaknesses or concerns need to be advised to the guide at the start of the day and to The Torridon before the festival.

Low level walks will follow estate roads and footpaths with easy height gain but a reasonable level of fitness is still recommended.

Bring your walking shoes!

Did You Know? The Savoy London

June 16, 2014
By: Five Star Alliance

The Savoy LondonIrish actor Richard Harris is famously known for playing Professor Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movie series. But did you know that he spent the last 12 years of his life living in Room 758 at London's ultra-luxurious Savoy Hotel

Harris reportedly liked the suite life for several reasons. Chief among them was that, unlike at home, he could order up a pint or a sandwich at 4am, if he so desired. For the privilege of late-night sandwiches, Harris paid approximately 6,000 pounds per month.

Shortly before his death from cancer, Harris was taken out of the hotel on a stretcher. According to an article in London's Daily Mail, as he went past the lobby, he shouted to the hotel guests found there that "It was the food! Don't touch the food!"

The hotel, far from taking offense at the legendary prankster's last joke, instead has named one of its Personality Suites after him. These suites are among the most spacious in the hotel and each suite has been furnished with special pieces, artwork and antiques associated with their namesake. The Art Deco style suites offer a separate sitting room, large bedroom with en-suite bathroom, separate dressing area, marble entrance foyer ,and guest cloakroom. Every Suite features a sofa, 2 armchairs and writing desk in the sitting room, a dressing table and armchair in the bedroom, personal bar, Loewe flat-screen televisions, Meridian iPod docking station, DVD player and bespoke Savoy furnishings. The well-appointed marble bathrooms all feature a freestanding, claw foot bath, separate walk-in showers with the famous Savoy rain showerhead, a double vanity, large chrome fittings and Le Labo amenities.

By: K. Clare Johnson

Grand Hotel Villa SerbelloniFor the past 100 years or more, Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni has been one of the most well-known and prestigious hotels in the world. Right from the outset, the Grand Hotel became the chosen destination for illustrious guests in search of peace: royalty, aristocrats, figures from international politics, and movie stars. The Sovereigns of Spain, Romania, Albania, Egypt; above all the Russian and English aristocracy; Winston Churchill, Roosevelt, the Rothschilds, J.F. Kennedy; Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Maria Schell, Clark Gable, Robert Mitchum, Al Pacino.... these are just some of the famous guests who have strolled through the rooms and lakeside gardens of the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, enjoying its beauty and outstanding hospitality.

Located on the gorgeous Lake Como, where the blue waters meet the green mountains which soar above the lake, the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni enjoys a breathtaking position on the promontory which juts halfway out into the lake, separating the two branches. The luxurious vegetation of its Italian-style gardens, abounding in Mediterranean and subtropical plants, flourishes in the pleasant microclimate around the lake. The locale enjoys sunshine almost all year round, accompanied by mild temperatures in every season. From April to November the salons and the large lakeside garden offer guests the chance to enjoy a holiday far from the madding crowd and close to nature immersed in one of the most beautiful panoramas in the world.

Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

The hotel's  interior reflects the good taste loved by the wealthy nobility of the time. Its walls and ceilings are adorned with frescoes and paintings of mythological scenes, gilded frames, festoons, temples, putti, flamingos, and Pompeian reds. The coffer ceilings are frescoed with floral patterns in grey and pink tones. Guests will enjoy period wall coverings in the French style, antique Persian carpets, crystal chandeliers from Murano, Imperial furniture, and the neo-classical and Art Nouveau style; not to mention the marble staircases, the stucco work columns, and the splendid trompe l'oeil. The "salle à manger" alone is a genuine monument to art, as is the Salone Reale, which in the evening is lit by bronze and crystal chandeliers, the splendor of whose lights are reflected by large mirrors.

Grand Hotel Villa SerbelloniLovers of peace and quiet can alternate the pleasure of a poolside drink with beauty treatments and programmes at Villa Serbelloni SPA, the hotel's own beauty farm. Guests can set off from the private dock for a motorboat trip to the historic gardens along the lake which, in springtime, attract tourists from all over the world: especially for the wonderful flowering of the azaleas.  Lovers of sport can take advantage of the hotel gym and tennis courts, enjoy delightful walks, take a mountain bike out on the Bellagio promontory, and cool off in the swimming pool overlooking the lake.
