Did You Know? The Stafford London

By: Five Star Alliance

The American Bar at The Stafford is an institution in its own right. This lively gathering spot has, over the years, developed into a complete history of the hotel itself, decorated with thousands of items of customer-donated memorabilia from around the globe.

During the 1930s most West End hotels in London renamed their bar "The American Bar" in an attempt to attract the business of the increasing numbers of North American visitors. These intrepid travellers brought with them such exotic drinks such as Manhattans, Sidecars, and Martinis, which the bar is famous for.

Most hotels have renamed their bars yet The Stafford remains one of only two in London that have kept the name.

The Stafford London

The American Bar's collection of memorabilia was started when an American guest gave Charles Guano – the hotel's late, beloved Head Barman of 42 years – a small wooden carving of an American eagle. Shortly after, a Canadian guest gave him a small model of an Eskimo. Then an Australian presented a model of a kangaroo, and so the collection grew and grew.

Today, every available wall and surface is crammed with an intriguing collection of artefacts, knick-knacks and signed celebrity photographs. Even the ceiling is hung with a colourful collection of club ties, sporting mementoes and baseball caps.

By: Five Star Alliance

The largest swimming pool in the world is more than 3,000 feet long, with a deep end that descends 115 feet. So where is the Guinness-record holding pool?

San Alfonso del Mar

It's at the San Alfonso del Mar resort in Valparaiso, Chile. It holds 250 million liters of water. How big is that? It's the equivalent of 6,000 8 meter pool. Besides its gargantuan size, the water is an an impossible-to-believe clear turquoise. This has been made possible thanks to an advanced technology developed by the company Crystal Lagoons, which is able to collect ocean water and keep it in perfect condition. But this is not all that it is there: during summer, the lagoon further maintains a pleasant temperature that borders 26ºC, nine degrees more than the nearby sea temperature.

Art is Appreciated at Tolarno Hotel Melbourne

By: Five Star Alliance

Tolarno Hotel Melbourne
Tolarno Hotel Melbourne

is housed in St Kilda's infamous Tolarno building. The hallway and room walls are highlighted by original local artwork reminiscent of the days when it was owned renowned artist, Mirka Mora and her husband George, who lived and operated The Tolarno Gallery from this building.

Tolarno Hotel Melbourne

Set in the heart of St Kilda's cafe, bar and club precinct, the hotel is a short stroll to the beach, Acland Street galleries and the Sunday Esplanade Market. Right outside the hotel are trams offering direct access to Melbourne's CBD, the Casino, Southbank, National Gallery and Royal Botanic Gardens.

Over the years, the hotel has firmly cemented itself as a cultural institution and played host to some of Australia's most-loved artists, including works from the likes of Sidney Nolan and Howard Arkley.

Today it lies at the heart of bringing Melbourne's most exciting, up-and-coming artistic talents to the world. Namely students from VCA, RMIT and Monash, as well as a number of local artists.

The premise is simple: each room is specifically designed around select works from a particular artist and the winners of each annual prize are exhibited in the hotel foyer. The upshot is that guests are afforded a unique opportunity to purchase works from the artists directly.

At the heart of Tolarno Hotel's present-day incarnation are co-owners James Fagan and Bernard Corser. Their friendship dates back to the early-Nineties and is one that shares the love of art.

Tolarno Hotel Melbourne

After purchasing the hotel in 1996, James and Bernard sought to retain the essence of the hotel's flamboyant, idiosyncratic personality. From the outset, they wanted to retain the building's heritage and eclectic ambiance while creating something truly unique. The pair established the Tolarno Hotel's first annual art prize with RMIT in 2002. The success, of which, led them to set up a similar prize with VCA the following year. Monash University then followed suit in 2005. The upshot being that many students exhibited in the hotel have gone on to gain considerable kudos in the art world.
