Did You Know? San Alfonso del Mar has the World's Largest Swimming Pool

By: Five Star Alliance

The largest swimming pool in the world is more than 3,000 feet long, with a deep end that descends 115 feet. So where is the Guinness-record holding pool?

San Alfonso del Mar

It's at the San Alfonso del Mar resort in Valparaiso, Chile. It holds 250 million liters of water. How big is that? It's the equivalent of 6,000 8 meter pool. Besides its gargantuan size, the water is an an impossible-to-believe clear turquoise. This has been made possible thanks to an advanced technology developed by the company Crystal Lagoons, which is able to collect ocean water and keep it in perfect condition. But this is not all that it is there: during summer, the lagoon further maintains a pleasant temperature that borders 26ºC, nine degrees more than the nearby sea temperature.

Did You Know? Tiara Chateau Hotel Mont Royal

By: Five Star Alliance

Back at the beginning of the last century, Fernand Halphen bought the 12 acres of land close to Chantilly, land which would eventually become Tiara Chateau Hotel Mont Royal. The location was covered with ponds and meadows. His vision was to build a wonderful countryside residence on the highest wooded hillock. He and his wife were both enchanted by the breathtaking view.Tiara Chateau

Halphen was a noted composer, in his time. He called upon architect Guillaume Tronchet and the best builders to construct a chateau that celebrated music on the inside and hunting, his other passion, on the outside. The chateaus drawing rooms were dedicated to music, while the bas-reliefs on the facade conjured up the world of hunting.

Did You Know? 51 Buckingham Gate

By: Five Star Alliance

51 Buckingham Gate

51 Buckingham Gate
is tucked away on St. James Court. You could easily pass it – because the street is almost too narrow to let you stand back and enjoy the full panorama of its Victorian-Edwardian stone-trim-and-brick-façade. Linking the eight mansion blocks that surround this court is an endless frieze of figures carved from the bricks that dance around the quad, reputedly the longest frieze in existence anywhere in the world.

What makes St. James Court all the more special is that its builder was not a famous architect or hotelier, but an almost unknown English gentleman. Major Charles Pawley was a retired military man who had learned his skills in the Royal Engineers.

St. James Court was a Major Pawley's masterwork.

Did You Know? Pennyhill Park Hotel and The Spa

By: Five Star Alliance

pennyhill park hotel and the spa
The earliest reference to Pennyhill Park Hotel and The Spa in Bagshot, Surrey, is found in the Tithe Land Registry of 1609. It was known as Pennyhill field and thought to have been common land used as a beacon-warning site aiding a national system, warning the arrival of the Spanish Armada in 1588.

James Hodges, a civil engineer, who had been born in Queensborough in Kent in 1814, began to build the first house on the site in 1849 and was completed in 1851, the year of the Great Exhibition.

James Hodges died in 1879 and the next occupant of Pennyhill was Louis Schott, a banker born in Frankfurt but with British Nationalisation. He added the Orangery in 1881 – the site of the current 45,000 sqft Spa. Louis died in 1901 and the house was then occupied until 1922 by his nephew, Louis Floershim, also born in Frankfurt and a naturalised British subject. He extended the house in 1903 in neo-Tudor style using Bath stone. For a period during the 1st World War the house reputedly served as a rest house for officers.

Did You Know? Cliveden House

By: Five Star Alliance

Cliveden House was first built in 1666 by the 2nd Duke of Buckingham. A notorious rake, schemer and wit, he created Cliveden as a hunting lodge where he could entertain his friends and mistress.

Since then it has twice been destroyed by fire, only to emerge, phoenix-like, more stunning than before. The house has played host to virtually every British monarch since George I and has been home to three Dukes, an Earl and Frederick Prince of Wales, who created a happy family home here until his death in 1751.

Clivden House

Queen Victoria, a frequent guest was not amused when the house was bought by William Waldorf Astor, America's richest citizen. When in 1906 he gave it to his son and daughter-in-law Nancy Astor, Cliveden became the hub of a hectic social whirl, where notable guests included everyone from Charlie Chaplin to Winston Churchill, and President Roosevelt to George Bernard Shaw.
