It's Business Time: Fairmont Singapore Best Business Hotel in Singapore

March 28, 2012
By: Christopher Roney

There's a very interesting split in the travel industry between business and leisure travelers. And if you're one of the business types, you know well that you're on the road constantly and the things that matter to you, travel convenience, efficiency, and connectivity, are almost the opposite of what a leisure traveler might want. If the word 'secluded' ever appeared in a hotel description, you'd cross it off the list immediately. So I'm here to use some adjectives you might appreciate hearing in describing some of the world's best business hotels. Today? Singapore.

In real estate, it's all about three things: location, location, location. For the business traveler, it's much the same, and the good folks at Fairmont kept that in mind with the Fairmont Singapore. The hotel is located at the crossroads of Singapore's major business, cultural, and shopping districts.  A staggering 70,000 square feet of meeting space means that you can host an event of just about any size in the hotel's wonderfully furnished top-of-the-line meeting rooms.  The main ballroom itself can host up to 3200 people, and there's another auxiliary room that can hold up to 1,000. After you're done with business, relax and unwind, or treat your guests, at the Willow Stream Spa, one of the largest in the city, ensuring that you can find exactly what you're looking for.  And with 769 rooms and suites, all of the executives can stay on-site; there's no having to worry about booking additional rooms and coordinating transportation to other hotels. The Fairmont Singapore is a business center in the center of business for Southeast Asia.

Taj Lake Palace Gets Twitter Accolades

March 26, 2012
By: Christopher Roney

The Taj Lake Palace has long been in our category of super luxury, and it's certainly one of the most beautiful hotels in our collection.  And now, it's getting some celebrity recognition, thanks to hotshot designer Diane von Furstenberg.  She recently stayed at the hotel and declared it possibly the 'best hotel in the world.'  A woman with an eye for fashion, her approval certainly counts a little more than the average bear's.  While the superlative might be a bit hyperbolic and a few other hotels give it a run for its money, I can't imagine experiencing anything less than the sublime at the Taj Lake Palace.

The white marble palace seems to be suspended above the waters of the surrounding lake, where the Maharana lived and entertained at his summer palace.  Ceremonial barges and private dinner-pontoons promise to whisk you away to a land of enchantment, and the breathtaking gardens and lily ponds are the perfect setting for romance.  If you can't trust me, then take the word of Diane von Furstenberg, and stay at the Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur.

Sustained Joy: Thanyamundra Organic Resort

March 21, 2012
By: Christopher Roney

I'm an unashamed environmentalist.  I like not being baked like a biscuit by the sun and also not having hurricanes all up on the Gulf stream. So when I hear about a resort that takes natural sustainability and turns it into a luxury activity for rejuvenating the mind, body and soul, it's the perfect hotel for me.  I knew there was a solution to how I could both have nice things and support a growing organic movement, and that solution is the Thanyamundra Organic Resort.  It's the quintessential quiet retreat on an organic farm in Suratthani, Thailand, and the views of the rice paddies and fruit groves are breathtaking and reinvigorating.  With just 7 suites and 2 rooms on the property, you're guaranteed to have a secluded, tailored experience that takes you away from the hustle and bustle of the urban lifestyle.  We could all use a few more private moments in our lives, and this is five-star luxury that makes you proud. I love the concept, and I love the execution of the Thanyamundra Organic Resort.

Nothing Evil about the Villingili Resort and Spa Maldives

March 20, 2012
By: Christopher Roney

The Maldives are well-known for being one of the few places in the world you can find overwater bungalows, largely because the water is calm and pristine enough to support the fragile construction they require.  But in the land of floating villas, the Shangri-La Villingili Resort and Spa Maldives is looking to make a name for itself in another way.  Rather than send their villas out into the water, they've taken to the foliage, their tree house villas nestled in the beachfront palm fronds that every child learns to draw at the age of 5 as foreshadowing of their future desire to stay at a place like this.

The resort plays home to all the features that the luxury traveler has come to expect.  Khazaanaaga, a divided, on-site restaurants give you options from the South China Sea, Arabian Gulf, and Indian Ocean, and Javvu gives you the more Western choice and cafe-style dining during the day.  CHI, the Spa at Shangri-La offers every treatment you could ever want while relaxing on a sandy beachfront and is inspired by traditional Chinese and Himalayan spiritual and physical wellness.  A children's adventure zone, two tennis courts, and an Eco centre that allows you to explore the local flora and fauna even after you've come back from any of 25 dive sites, including a British shipwreck.  The Shangri-La Villingili Resort and Spa is just about everything I'm looking for in a beachfront property.

Service with a Paddle: The Banyan Tree Kerala

March 15, 2012
By: Christopher Roney

As our friends at Luxury Travel Advisor report, something big is afoot at the upcoming Banyan Tree Kerala.  Set to open on the 1st of December this year, the hotel is redefining what to expect of a secluded resort.  In a scene that I imagine belonging more in the Lord of the Rings than anywhere in real life, arrival to the Banyan Tree Kerala will be heralded by your approach. An approach in a boat, sailed through the tranquil waters and right into the hotel lobby, thus giving them the best boat-to-lobby distance ration (BTL) of any hotel in the world.  We all have to be great at something, right?  Seriously, it's such a novel concept for a resort brand that prides itself on its exclusivity, and I'm a huge fan of non-traditional lobbies.  And what could be more non-traditional than the potent lobby-harbor combination?  As their PR Rep told me, "I heard you like boats, so I put a boat in your lobby, so you can check-in while you boat."*

This is certainly a hotel property to be on the lookout for.  Banyan Tree always seems to deliver on their particular brand of luxury, and they're clearly looking to innovate on their already successful concept.  While you're waiting for the Banyan Tree Kerala to open, check out our other Banyan Tree resorts.

It's Business Time: Park Hyatt Best Business Hotel Tokyo

There's a very interesting split in the travel industry between business and leisure travelers.  And if you're one of the business types, you know well that you're on the road constantly and the things that matter to you, travel convenience, efficiency, and connectivity, are almost the opposite of what a leisure traveler might want.  If the word 'secluded' ever appeared in a hotel description, you'd cross it off the list immediately.  So I'm here to use some adjectives you might appreciate hearing in describing some of the world's best business hotels.  Today? Tokyo.

Guests may be familiar with the criticallly-acclaimed Park Hyatt Tokyo from its estranged cinematic guests from the film Lost in Translation.  Designed as a modern private residence, the 178 rooms and suites are the most spacious in the city.  Its 24-hour business center gives you unparalleled access to everything you might need, and it is located next to the city's major transportation hub.  The Shinjuku station provides rail and subway access to anywhere in the city. Extensive meeting and business facilities provide spacious room for anything from business meetings to conferences.  And you can wine and dine your clients at the New York Grill, number one for the past five years in Tokyo's Zagat Survey.  The Park Hyatt Tokyo is everything a business traveler looks for, packaged up nicely in one convenient location.  And who knows? You might even have an incredibly dysfunctional but endearing relationship with an American transplant while you're there.

Going out on a Limb: The Peninsula Bangkok

March 5, 2012
By: Christopher Roney

Looking for a place to stay along the Chao Phraya riverfront in Bangkok?  Well, look no further than the Peninsula Bangkok.  The 370-room super luxury hotel was voted the world's best in 2003 and has kept up its best-of-the-best presentation since.  Guests are treated to uninterrupted panoramic views of the river and city, and with a beauty spa and fine dining on site, you'll find little need to leave the hotel if you desire not to.  Pick from any of four restaurants:  traditional Cantonese at Mei Jiang, homestyle Thai at Thiptara, international buffet at River Cafe & Terrace, and Pacific Rim at Jesters.  And once you've satiated your body, satisfy your mind by relaxing in a wonderful three-tiered swimming pool.  Maintain the careful balance by adjusting the custom environmental controls in your chich but classical room.  The Peninsula Bangkok really is my choice to stay for my next trip to the city.
