Did You Know? The Montague on the Gardens

December 20, 2014
By: Five Star Alliance

The Montague on the Gardens is named for the dissolute Ralph, Duke of Montagu, who came by this land in a very devious manner. The Duchess of Albemarle was a unscrupulous woman who enjoyedthe fruits of her late husband's scheme to discover buried treasure. The Duchess swore that unless the Prince of Tartary himself were to come to her door and beg her to be his wife by throwing himself at her feet, she would never remarry. Hearing of this, the unscrupulous Duke of Montagu dressed up as the Prince, and thus acquired both her hand and her fortune. He appropriated his wife’s money to construct for himself a vast mansion, Montagu House, in Great Russell Street. The land of Montague Street formed part of its ten-acre garden, thus confirming that the Montague on the Garden is well-named. Six years after it was finished, Montagu House burned down in just five hours. His Grace promptly had it rebuilt and lived on here until his death in 1709.

Did You Know? Tiara Chateau Hotel Mont Royal Chantilly

December 14, 2014
By: Five Star Alliance

Back at the beginning of the last century, Fernand Halphen bought 12 acres of land close to Chantilly. The location was covered with ponds and meadows. His vision was to build a wonderful countryside residence on the highest wooded hillock. Halphen was a noted composer, in his time. He called upon architect Guillaume Tronchet and the best builders to construct a chateau that celebrated music on the inside and hunting, his other passion, on the outside. The chateau’s drawing rooms were dedicated to music, while the bas-reliefs on the facade conjured up the world of hunting. That chateau is now Tiara Chateau Hotel Mont Royal Chantilly.

Did You Know? Waterford Castle

By: Five Star Alliance

Waterford Castle is located on a 310-actre private island that is nestled on Kings Channel. According to tradition a Monastic settlement existed on the Island sometime between the sixth and the eighth centuries. Two finds on the Island have lent substance to this: A Winged Angel dating from the 8th century and the crude carving of a Monk's head, which is now prominently displayed over the main entrance to the Castle, dating from the 6th century.

Did You Know? Fisher Island Hotel And Resort

Fisher Island Resort and Spa
Fisher Island was a wedge of land with coconut palms and mangroves that sat in Biscayne Bay. In 1919, Miami Beach founder and developer Carl Fisher bought it from Dana Dorsey, South Florida's first black millionaire. Fisher, when trying to expand the island and build deep-water docks, experienced quite a bit of push back from the County, which delayed his progress. The construction of the Port of Miami served to separate the lush appendage from Miami Beach, creating an entirely distinctive island. In the 1920's, Carl Fisher traded 7-acres of Fisher Island for a yacht from William K. Vanderbilt II.

In 1936,  Vanderbilt began building his $1.5 million private island retreat on Fisher Island with a Mediterranean-style mansion. He surrounded this mansion with lush landscaping, gracious guest homes, tennis courts and swimming pools. The main home and the surrounding guest cottages were completed in 1941. Rosemary's Cottage was built for Vanderbilt's stepdaughter Rosemary (Rosamund's daughter from her first marriage.) The studio cottage was built for Rosamund to paint in, as she was an artist. The North and South Cottages were for the their servants. The building now referred to today as the Jr. Suites was built to house the crewman for his yacht. The building now the Spa Internazionale was Vanderbilt's personal airplane hanger.
