Talk of the Town: Fairmont’s Shanghai Peace Hotel is Now Open

August 3, 2010| By:Mary Winston Nicklin

Fairmont Shanghai Peace HotelWe've been keeping tabs on the renovation work of the Shanghai Peace Hotel and now the legendary landmark-- "painstakingly restored by Fairmont Hotels during a three-year closure"-- is now open. Described as the "highest-profile hotel in China" by The Independent (UK), hailed "one of the most challenging, and closely watched, historical restoration efforts in China" by The Financial Times, the hotel originally opened in 1929 and was then known as the "Number One mansion in the Far East." After a top-to-bottom overhaul, the Shanghai Peace Hotel is now welcoming guests to bunk down in the 270 swanky guest rooms, sup in one of six bars and restos, and bask in the skylit swimming pool. Buzz: The new presidential suite is housed in the rooms that were "once home to the hotel's flamboyant founder, Sir Victor Sassoon." Booking tip: Get a 4th night free until August 31, 2010.
