Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Palace Hotel is Back

August 13, 2010| By:Mary Winston Nicklin

Taj Mahal Palace and Tower, MumbaiTwenty-one months since the deadly terrorist attacks in late 2008, the landmark Taj Mahal Palace reopened the oldest part of the hotel yesterday to much fanfare and celebration. Though most of the hotel reopened a month after the attack, restoration of the 107-year-old heritage wing-- which sustained most of the damage-- cost some $37.3 million. Two new additions: the Tata Suite and the Ravi Shankar Suite, "where the classical Indian musician taught guitarist George Harrison how to play the sitar for The Beatles' 1967 album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." Bonus perk for guests: airport transfers in chauffer-driven Jaguars.
