Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello: The World’s Largest Log Cabin

June 23, 2008| By:Mary Winston Nicklin

Fairmont Le Chateau MontebelloOn the banks of the Ottawa River in Eastern Canada, guests are privy to a most unusual destination hotel. Fairmont Hotels and Resorts welcomes guests to the biggest log cabin in the world: Le Chateau Montebello. The dream of a Swiss-American entrepreneur in the 1920s, the chateau was built by 3,000 workers using Scandinavian log construction techniques. When it first opened on July 1, 1930, Le Chateau Montebello dazzled guests with its massive hexagonal rotunda with a six-sided stone fireplace that rose over 65 feet to the roof. The project contained over 10,000 logs. Over the years, this hotel has become one of the leading resorts in Canada, celebrated for its rustic luxury. Year-round activities include golf, hiking, skiing, wild bear observation, and hunting and fishing. Plus, the pool (pictured) is absolutely magnificent.
