Did You Know? Raffles Hotel Singapore

February 12, 2014
By: Five Star Alliance

Raffles Hotel Singapore
Raffles Hotel Singapore
has claimed itself to be the home of the Singapore Sling. The down to earth decor of the two-story Long Bar where the drink was said to originate was inspired by the Malayan plantations of the 1920s. The bar has the safe where Sling creator, bartender Ngiam Tong Boon, locked away his recipe books. You can also see a version of the recipe from 1936, which a curious patron jotted down on a receipt. In addition to almost every alcoholic and non-alcoholic concoction imaginable, the bar also serves traditional pub favourites that are available as a meal or snacks. In the evening, a band performs a selection of contemporary and popular hits.

The recipe for the Singapore Sling varies widely, but here's one to try, courtesy of Imbibe Magazine

1 oz. London dry gin
1 oz. Bols Cherry brandy or Cherry Heering
1 oz. Benedictine
1 oz. fresh lime juice
2 oz. soda water
1 dash Angostura bitters
Tools: barspoon
Glass: Collins

Combine all ingredients except soda water and bitters in an ice-filled glass. Top with soda water, stir briefly and dash with Angostura bitters. Note: The original Singapore Sling appears to have been ungarnished. By the mid-1920s, they were adding the peel of a lime, cut in a thick spiral. By the late ’30s, they were also omitting the Benedictine and bitters and floating Sloe Gin on top.

QUESTION: We are in need of an ADA room for our family in Venice, what can you recommend?

ANSWER: The Westin Europa and Regina The Westin Europa and Regina

Situated on the final stretch of Venice's Grand Canal where it broadens to become the Bacino di San Marco, The Westin Europa and Regina, Venice occupies a position of absolute privilege, offering views which inspired the impressionist painter Claude Monet, and facing the beautiful Italian Baroque church of Santa Maria della Salute. St. Mark's Square, St. Mark's Basilica, the La Fenice Opera House, and Calle XXII Marzo, Venice's prestigious shopping area, are all steps away. Composed of five 18th and 19th century historic palaces, the oldest of which belonged to the Tiepolos, the illustrious Venetian family that gave the city two "Doges" and the 17th century painter Giambattista Tiepolo, The Westin Europa and Regina, Venice today offers guests a sophisticated combination of characteristic elegance and modern technology.

The public areas of the hotel embrace guests in a distinguished, welcoming atmosphere that is attentive to every necessity; here you'll find marble and mosaic flooring taken from the original design of the Scuola di San Rocco, walls partially covered in sensual tones of marble, characteristic Venetian decorations and furnishings, and the splendid hand-made Murano glass chandeliers.
Guestroom decors vary from characteristic Venetian style lacquered furniture in yellow, green or pink pastel colours, to a refreshing modern decor in light blues, creams, greys and oranges. All guestrooms offer Westin's famous Heavenly Bed; Wi-Fi is available on some guestroom floors and non-smoking rooms can be requested. The Westin Europa and Regina

For Your Needs, We Recommend:

Deluxe Double. Expect an opulent atmosphere in the renewed Deluxe Doubles which you'll find on all floors of The Westin Europa & Regina's Barozzi and Ca Nova palaces. Relax and unwind in accommodation designed and decorated using fabrics that reflect the historical surroundings of the five star hotel, and featuring local artisan craftwork, Venetian beveled mirrors, Murano glass appliques, satin and velvet-covered furnishings, and walnut furniture inlaid with gold leaf. The rooms feature windows that look over Venice's calle and neighbouring buildings, 32-inch flat screen LCD TV and high speed internet connections, polished marble bathrooms, the invigorating range of Heavenly Bath® amenities, roll-in showers and accessible WC (2 guestrooms). Some Deluxe Doubles are located convenient to the hotel elevators for guests with walking difficulties. Deluxe Doubles may adjoin Premium Deluxe doubles, or connect with a 1-Bedroom Deluxe Suite to form a 2-Bedroom Deluxe Suite.
