Did You Know? Chateau Marmont

Chateau Marmont

Modeled after an infamous royal residence in France's Loire Valley, Chateau Marmont opened its doors in 1929. It was originally a luxury apartment residence, but was converted to a hotel during the Great Depression. The hotel was acquired and restored in 1990 by André Balazs. The hotel has become a celebrity in its own right.

The hotel is popular with celebrities both for its iconic appearance and its private accommodations. Each of the sixty-three rooms, cottages and bungalows are a home of their own. The majority have full kitchens, sitting areas or living rooms, some have formal dining rooms, balconies and private terraces. The scale is gracious from a long gone era, perfect for hosting an impromptu party-thick soundproof walls ensure privacy.

In 2010, Sofia Coppola directed her movie Somewhere at the hotel. The opening scene of The Canyons was shot at the Bar Marmont. Other celebrities would have produced work at the hotel include Hunter S. Thompson, Annie Leibovitz, Dorothy Parker, Bruce Weber, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Tim Burton, and Jay McInerney. Legendary actor Robert De Niro is well-known for his penchant of often retreating to one of the hotel's two penthouses.

Did You Know? The Beverly Hills Hotel

The Beverly Hills Hotel

Legendary billionaire heir, Hollywood producer, and recluse Howard Hughes spent a good chunk of his life in a bungalow at The Beverly Hills Hotel.  Hughes famously became a recluse after an aviation accident that nearly killed him. In 1947, he spent four months in his private screening room, where he subsisted on a diet of chocolate, chicken, and milk. After he emerged, Hughes took up residence in Bungalow 4 at the legendary Pink Palace. He allegedly left his Cadillac outside and unused for so long that the tires went flat and plants began to grow in the car's interior. His wife and key staff members also took up residence in the hotel, albeit in different rooms.

Hughes spent time living in other luxury hotels. In the early 1940s, he lived in the Sunset Tower Hotel. Hughes and his entourage occupied the entire top floor and the 14th floor as well. He also spent time at Eden Rock Hotel on St. Barth's. The luxury resort has a suite named after him. The Howard Hughes loft is situated on top of the iconic main house, and has three terraces and a stunning 360° view of the bay. The suite also has a King size bed, kitchenette, dining area, spacious living area, and 2 copper clad bathrooms.

Spa Nautica at the Ritz Carlton Marina del Rey

March 14, 2013
By: Meagan Drillinger

Five Star Alliance's sister publication, Luxury Travel Advisor, recently wrote an article about Ritz-Carlton's Marina Del Ray's new Spa Nautica:

We’ve discovered a new way for you to unwind in the California sun. The Ritz-Carlton Marina del Rey in Los Angeles has opened the full-service Spa Nautica. The spa had its soft opening on February 1, but the grand opening was at the beginning of this month. We love the spa’s nautical theme (how appropriate). There are seven treatment rooms, including separate rooms for couples’ treatments and wet treatments, as well as a full-service nail salon. During the warmer months, outdoor treatments will be available on the hotel’s pool deck. We hear Natura Bisse is the product of choice at this posh playground—great for pampering VIPs before a red carpet debut. And, true to SoCal mentality, the spa is environmentally conscious (think organic and vegan products). Each of the spa’s treatments can be enhanced with a variety of options, depending on the service, including aromatherapy, hot stone infusion, hand and foot polish, reflexology, hot oil scalp treatment, micronized algae mask, and Glyco 3 peel. In the land of Hollywood glitz and glam, figure-friendly cuisine is of the utmost importance. Spa Nautica features healthy selections of spa cuisine that can be snacked upon poolside. The hotel’s Executive Chef Umit Kaygusuz sources local, organically grown produce at the Santa Monica Farmers Market. Nice Touch: Any 60-minute spa treatment booking gains guests access to the pool, Jacuzzi and eucalyptus steam rooms.

Ice Skating in LA Made Possible Thanks to the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel

November 19, 2012
By: Oksana Balytsky

We love southern California (or SoCal as the locals call it), but we certainly miss partaking in winter holiday festivities when December rolls around. The Hyatt Regency Century Plaza seems to have understood our pain and has recently opened a 3,000 square foot ice rink! The rink is a hybrid version that utilizes non-refrigerated synthetic ice made from recyclable polymers on which regular ice skates work very well. Hopefully that means when we attempt to do an axel jump, the fall won’t be as cold or hard as on real ice. The Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel has had a few other upgrades including installing an infinity pool and upgrading all of its cabanas.  We love how this hotel is setting itself apart from its neighboring properties, and we can't wait to see what other upgrades and installations it has up its sleeve.

Make reservations at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel and cross off ‘ice skate in shorts’ from your bucket list!
