From Jonathan Critchard, General Manager, The Athenaeum Hotel and Apartments
Mr. Critchard at The Athenaeum Hotel in London sent us the following note aimed at new or returning guests, to make sure they are aware of some changes the hotel is undergoing.
January 2006 sees the start of a stunning redesign of our ground floor, incorporating the lobby, lounge, restaurant and bar. Led by the vision of Martin Hulbert, responsible for the award winning interior design of our sister property, The Grove, the existing interiors will be entirely replaced by a new scheme. Renowned for his inspirational creativity, he will be developing a style that is both quintessentially English, but also modern in its opulence and feel.
During this period,we are temporarily relocating our entrance to the side of the hotel on Down Street. However, the show goes on!
Our reception and concierge are operating from the First Floor. Alex, Donald, Duncan, Jim, John and the rest of our team are still here to ensure you enjoy your stay and your time in London.

A timeless and elegant tradition for gentlemen is returning. Grooming with master barbers in the style of earlier American and English traditions are returning with a modernized and upscale version of “barbershop spas.”
Next time you're in Las Vegas, make time to visit The Art of Shaving (at Mandalay Place) or Truefitt and Hill (at the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace) and try something that will make you look and feel great before heading out for a night on the town and some evening adventures.
What's the difference between a traditional straight-edge shave and an off-the-shelf multi-cartridge shave? The straight-edge is used to cut with and against the grain which results in a much closer shave, and leaves your face absolutely smooth all over. In addition to the usual shave and a hair cut, men have the option of being pampered and rejuvenated with techniques found in upscale spas such as hot and cold aromatherapy towels, facial masks, luxuriant shaving creams, balms, and oils-- along with various hair care and skincare products, fragrances, shoe shines, and manicures.
You're in good company, following the likes of royalty, industry execs, and celebs like Frank Sinatra who have opted for traditional shaves.

Thank you, Forbes. Their list includes Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas—with its dazzling 14-acre water park; the most elegant Badrutt's Palace in St. Moritz, Switzerland, with excellent supervised actitivies for the kiddies; and the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess with the impressive Fairmont Kids Club. But ClubMed in the DR? Come on, guys.
A ship is to sunk-- intentionally-- off the coast of Pensacola, Florida. As CNN reports:
If all goes according to plan, explosives will be placed throughout the largely hollowed-out shell of the USS Oriskany in May and it will plummet 210 feet to the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico. The ship that starred in films like "The Bridges of Toko Ri" and "The Men of the Fighting Lady," will play a new role as bait to lure serious divers and sport fishermen worldwide and help boost tourism to the hurricane-ravished local economy.
Heading to Scottsdale for the best kind of Spring entertainment? Take yourself out to the ballgame! Arizona Spring Training is a favorite tradition not to be missed, and with a perfect location near the ballpark, the Hotel Valley Ho is the place to stay. The original hide-away for Bogart, Bing and Marilyn has been made-over into a hip urban resort, and reopened to much fanfare in December 2005. The chic rooms feature all-glass walls opening onto private patios, flat-screen TVs, WiFi, terrazzo tile bathrooms, and feather-top beds with 300-thread-count linens. As pictured, the cabana rooms are full of whimsy and flair—overlooking the pool. Post-game, head poolside to Cafe ZuZu for some classic American comfort food. Or pamper yourself with a massage at the VH Spa, then indulge in a little personal training of your own at the fitness center overlooking the perfect circle pool.
From the same chic LA hotelier that brought you the Viceroy Santa Monica, comes a new luxury residential property in the marvelous Mayan Riviera. The sister property to the new Viceroy Riviera Maya Resort—one of five exquisite luxury hotels built within the eco-sensitive Mayakoba Resort on the beautiful beaches south of Cancun— the Tides Playa del Carmen is a luxurious residential resort. The stretch of Yucatan coastline near Playa del Carmen has long been the hideaway for an international, travel-savvy crowd of cultured travelers. Now Kor brings "one-of-a-kind chic by the shore" with its new eight-acre retreat, reminiscent of the sophisticated Tides in South Beach. Construction is scheduled to begin this year and be completed in early 2008. The resort will include 190 luxury ocean-front residences with all the upscale amenities of the most exclusive resort: pool with destination bar-lounge, private Beach Club, fine dining, 10,000 square foot spa and fitness center.
