Did You Know? Castillo Hotel Son Vida

February 22, 2014
By: Five Star Alliance

Castillo Hotel Son Vida
Castillo Hotel Son Vida's
history dates back to the 13th century, when King Jaume I declared the hills behind Palma city—where the hotel is located—fertile ground. However, it wasn’t until the 16th century, when Mateu Vida acquired the medieval castle that now houses the hotel, that the building was baptized. The castle’s subsequent owners, the aristocratic Desmas and Truyols families, kept the castle’s distinctive name, marking the beginning of a proud heritage of elite service, elaborate feasts, and profound relaxation.

Castillo Hotel Son Vida

Near the turn of the 20th century, Fernando Truyols and Despuig undertook extensive and extravagant renovations as a gift to his wife, Magdalena Villalonga. The result was a villa with the look of a castle, complete with a tower. Fifty-seven years later, the Truyols family sold the private Son Vida estate,  and on June 23, 1961, the castle opened its doors as a luxury hotel.

In 1995, the hotel was purchased by the Schorghuber Group and renamed Castillo Hotel Son Vida. The hotel underwent a full renovation in 2005. Today, Castillo Hotel Son Vida draws influential guests from all over the world. Politicians and celebrities who have chosen Castillo Hotel Son Vida as their Mallorcan destination include: Prince Rainer of Monaco and Grace Kelly, Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas, Anthony Quinn, Pedro Almodovar, Claudia Schiffer, and many more.

Did You Know? Hotel Captain Cook

February 20, 2014
By: Five Star Alliance

Anchorage's Hotel Captain Cook is named for British explorer and cartographer whose three major voyages took him around the southern tips of Africa and South America, to Easter Island and, on his final voyage, along Alaska’s majestic coastline. Cook helped define Alaska in the 18th century by mapping its jagged coastline for the first time. In June of 1778, while looking for a Northwest Passage to Hudson Bay, he and his crew on the HMS Resolution dropped anchor in Turnagain Arm—within sight of the spot where the Hotel Captain Cook stands today.

Hotel Captain Cook

An earthquake in 1964 leveled much of downtown Anchorage. Businessman Walter J. Hickel, who was also Alaska's mayor, had already been investing in Alaska’s future for decades, building hotels and business centers as well as serving as Alaska’s governor, all with an eye to making Alaska the American gateway to the Pacific Rim. The Hotel has prospered and expanded with the times: the first Tower opened in 1965, followed by Tower II in 1972 and Tower III in 1978. Today, the 547-room hotel plays host to dignitaries, celebrities and people from all walks who love the grandeur of Alaska.
