Did You Know? Barnsley Gardens Resort

August 27, 2014
By: Five Star Alliance

Barnsley Gardens Resort has a long and storied history. It was build by one of the wealthiest men in the south, Godfrey Barnsley, for his wife Julia. Construction began on the Italian-style villa in the 1840s, on land that was once inhabited by Cherokee Indians. Both the home and its elaborate gardens were inspired by the work of Andrew Jackson Downing, a pioneering landscape designer and proponent of Italianate and gothic revival architecture. Sadly, Julia passed away before the home was completed.

Robots Take Over Starwood Hotels!

August 22, 2014
By: Five Star Alliance

Check into Aloft Hotels, and you may just run into some robotic customer service. Aloft Hotels, the tech-forward brand of Starwood Hotels, has introduced the hotel brand's first Botlr (robotic butler) at Aloft Cupertino. The addition is a logical next step for Aloft, which is known for its industry-first smart check-in program, Cool Concierge program, and piloting Apple TV in-room services.

A.L.O the Botlr will be on call to assist his Aloft human counterparts in delivering amenities to guests. Guests simply call down to the front desk, and the three-foot tall robot, who is on call 24/7, will fulfill every request. Staff load up A.L.O with the desired items (such as a toothbrush, an extra blanket, etc.) and then enter the correct guest room. A.L.O uses WiFi to get around, and call navigate hallways and call the elevator. Best of all, cash tips aren't accepted by A.L.O. Instead, the robot accepts tweets as tips. #cool

If A.L.O is successful, additional Botlrs will be implemented in Aloft's nearly 100 properties.

Hotel Monteleone Aims to Break Records

August 15, 2014
By: Five Star Alliance

Hotel Monteleone
Hotel Monteleone
, the quintessential New Orleans hotel, is looking to make history in a whole different way. Fittingly, the piece will be made out of Mardi Gras beads, bottle caps, and wine corks. It will depict Life in the French Quarter. Over the next year, Wanger will be traveling with the piece to schools and community centers statewide to work with volunteers on placing more than four million Mardi Gras beads on the art work. The piece will return to the Hotel Monteleone in summer 2015.

The massive art piece titled “Life in the French Quarter” is the latest project of local bead artist Stephan Wanger’s Bead Town initiative. The inspiration behind “Life in the French Quarter” is to translate everything that makes New Orleans great into art. Wanger’s vision of the piece features a background of iconic New Orleans scenery and a second line of famous local movers and shakers from the past and present including Lena and Louis Prima, Robin Barnes, Tennessee Williams and many more. The free standing 16-panel plywood canvas measures 96 feet wide by 8 feet tall and will be made entirely out of Mardi Gras Beads along with bottle caps and wine corks. Wanger started to prep the canvas by sketching out his vision for the piece in July 2014 and he projects it will take a year to add over four million Mardi Gras beads to complete the project by August 2015.
