Bees Get Busy at Waldorf Astoria New York

August 5, 2013
By: K. Clare Johnson

Waldorf Astoria New York

Waldorf Astoria New York is known for being one of Manhattan's most elegant Park Avenue hotels. But it's also one of the buzziest places in town, thanks to their rooftop bee colony. The hotel has 6 hives which have a total of 300,000 bees. The hives are located on a 20th floor terrace.

The bees at the Waldorf Astoria New York have been as busy as, well, bees this year! The luxury hotel is very proud to announce that they have gotten 207 pounds of honey from their first harvest alone. That far outpaces the 125 pounds collected from 3 harvests last year.

The bee-keeping idea can be credited to David Garcelone, the hotel's culinary director. The honey is incorporated into the menu at the hotels and there are plans to sell the honey to guests.

Did You Know? The Algonquin New York

July 30, 2013
By: Five Star Alliance

After World War I, Vanity Fair writers and Algonquin regulars Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, and Robert E. Sherwood began lunching at The Algonquin. In 1919, they gathered in the Rose Room with some literary friends to welcome back acerbic critic Alexander Woollcott from his service as a war correspondent. It proved so enjoyable that someone suggested it become a daily event. This led to a daily exchange of ideas, opinions, and often-savage wit that has enriched the world's literary life. George S. Kaufman, Heywood Broun, and Edna Ferber were also in this August assembly, which strongly influenced writers like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. Perhaps their greatest contribution was the founding of The New Yorker magazine, which today is free to guests of the hotel.

Did You Know? The Chatwal New York

June 15, 2013
By: K. Clare Johnson

The Chatwal New York

The Chatwal New York

is designed in a 1930s Empire Art Deco style. Based on its swanky looks alone, one almost expects Fred Astaire to waltz through the door. Fred has unfortunately shuffled off this mortal coil, but he did indeed hang out at the hotel when he was alive. Why?  Located on 44th Street, in the heart of the theater district, the building was originally host to the famous Lamb’s club, America’s first professional theater club. Other legendary members of the club include Spencer Tracey, Milton Berle, Charlie Chaplin, Irving Berlin, and Will Rogers.

Good-Bye Room Service?

June 3, 2013
By: Five Star Alliance

Hilton Hawaiian Village

No more cheeseburgers in the wee hours of the morning? No more breakfast in bed? That's the terrible future suggested by a recent Crain's New York Business news item picked up by Gawker. According to the Crain's piece, written by Lisa Fickenscher, Gotham's largest hotel, the New York Hilton Midtown, will discontinue room service in August. The hotel cited rising costs and declining popularity for the move.

The Hilton isn't the first hotel in the chain to get rid of room service, the Hilton Hawaiian Village (pictured left)eliminated room service in October 2012.

Guests won't go hungry though, the hotel will open a cafeteria style restaurant called Herb n'Kitchen where guests can grab a meal.
