By: Mary Winston Nicklin

The Madison, A Loews HotelThe National Geographic Museum in Washington D.C. is prepping for what promises to be an extraordinary exhibition featuring the largest collection of significant artifacts from China ever to travel to the United States. Opening in November 2009, "Terra Cotta Warriors: Guardians of China's First Emperor" will allow visitors to stand face to face with the famous terracotta warriors discovered in an archeological dig outside the city of Xi'an. Almost 2,000 years old and numbering in the thousands, the life-size clay figures were buried in underground pits to accompany China's first emperor, Qin Shihuangdi, into the afterlife. When it was found in 1974, the tomb complex was deemed one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century. Check out the exhibition-- featuring 15 life-size figures, weapons, armor, coins, and more-- and bed down at the museum's official partner hotel, The Madison, A Loews Hotel-- located just four blocks from the White House. Rates for the "National Geographic Museum Terracotta Warriors Package" start at just $149 per night and include accommodations, two premium "anytime" exhibition tickets and a 20 percent discount coupon for purchases in the National Geographic Store. Valid from November 19, 2009- March 31, 2010.

Don’t Miss in London: The Serpentine Gallery Temporary Pavilion

July 30, 2009
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

Serpentine Gallery Temporary Pavilion

Leading Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa designed the temporary pavilion this year at the Serpentine Gallery. Built in Kensington Gardens, the Pavilion commission is an ongoing program of temporary structures made by internationally-acclaimed architects whose work has not yet been built in England. Last year the architect was Frank Gehry. Open daily to the public until October 18, 2009, the structure is floating aluminum, resembling "a reflective cloud or a floating pool of water." The architects describe it this way: "The reflective canopy undulates across the site, expanding the park and sky. Its appearance changes according to the weather, allowing it to melt into the surroundings. It works as a field of activity with no walls, allowing uninterrupted view across the park and encouraging access from all sides. It is a sheltered extension of the park where people can read, relax and enjoy lovely summer days."
