Winvian's signature feature of the resort is eighteen individually architecturally designed cottages. Pictured below is the Artist Cottage. Based on a 1920's artist's bungalow with an overall feel of wood, stained glass and gingerbread, this cottage has many artistic details such as ceramic shard sculpted mirrors and custom art tile inserts in the bathroom. The bedroom boasts a custom made four poster bed with a barrel vaulted wooden canopy. The living room has an adjoining artist's studio with open canvases that feature various mediums (water colors, acrylics and oils) that encourage guests to be artistic.

The luxury hotel Gran Melia Rome Villa Agrippina is built on the site of a villa that once belonged to a Roman Empress who was the mother of the Emperor Nero. Julia Agrippina was one of the most powerful women in the Julio-Claudian dynasty. The relics and archaeological remains found during construction of the hotel are displayed in the public spaces of the Hotel by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage.

Did You Know? The Xara Palace

The Xara Palace is inextricably linked to that of Mdina, as its walls form part of the bastion walls that surround the hilltop city. Upon their arrival in Malta, the Knights of St John were granted Citta Notabile, (Noble City) as Mdina was then known. The Xara Palace was built in the 17th Century as a residence for the noble family Moscati Parisio. During their 268 year stay in Malta the Knights embellished, fortified and rebuilt Mdina, making it the city it is today.

In the 1920s, Irishman Alan Pye, discovered the incredible fly fishing on the reaches of the Waikato River and realised his dream to build a fishing lodge. Before long, the fame of The Huka Lodge had spread to every corner of the fly fishing world. As its reputation spread the Lodge attracted such famous anglers as HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother; Charles Lindbergh; James A. Mitchener (who wrote part of Return to Paradise there) as well as many famous film stars and public figures of the time.

Did You Know? Pinehurst Resort

James Tufts purchased what is now Pinehurst Resort for $1/acre in 1895, as a health-centered winter retreat. He purchased the name Pinehurst from an individual entering the name in a contest to tag a real estate development in Martha’s Vineyard. The physical plan for the Village of Pinehurst was prepared by the firm of Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape designer acclaimed for creating New York City’s Central Park.
