Did You Know? The Hotel Windsor Melbourne

Hotel Windsor Melbourne

The Hotel Windsor Melbourne was the dream of shipping magnate George Nipper. He commissioned architect Charles Webb to design the hotel and it opened its doors in December 1883. The Hotel Windsor predates many of the grand hotels of the Victorian era, including The Savoy London, The Plaza, The Waldorf Astoria New York, the Hotel Ritz Paris,  and The Raffles, Singapore.

George Nipper sold the "Grand", as it was then known, to James Munro who embarked on a massive expansion program. This doubled the size of the hotel, and saw the addition of the renowned Grand Ballroom, the Grand Staircase, and the twin cupola-capped towers.

At this point the hotel was known as the Grand Coffee Palace and for a brief period, under the influence of the Temperance Movement, banned liquor from its premises. By 1897, however, the hotel once again changed hands, welcomed back its original name, and regained its liquor license. From then on and for the better part of the 20th century, The Hotel Windsor Melbourne was a pivotal centre in the city and, indeed, Australia, for the political and social milieu. Australia's constitution was drafted at The Hotel Windsor between February and March 1898.

Ashford Castle
Ashford Castle
in Mayo is founded by the Anglo-Norman de Burgo family following their defeat of the native O'Connors of Connaught. The de Burgo's would build several such castles throughout the province, but Ashford in Ireland would remain the principal stronghold. The native O'Connors also leave a legacy in the form of the nearby 12th century Augustinian abbey of Cong, Co.Mayo, built on the site of a 6th century monastery.

After more than three and a half centuries under the de Burgo's, Ashford passes into the hands of a new owner. following a fierce battle between the forces of the de Burgo's and those of the English Lord Bingham, governor of Connaught, a truce is agreed and the castle falls to Bingham who adds a fortified enclave within its precincts.

Hastings House
In 1937, Warren Hastings, an English naval architect with a gift for story-telling, moved to Salt Spring Island from Sussex, England with his new bride Barbara. According to Hastings, he and Barbara "decided to build on Salt Spring Island because we love the sea and we think it is one of the most beautiful places in the world, with a lovely climate." Hastings built the Manor House in 1940 to resemble his 11th century Sussex-style family home because their "furniture was suitable for a house of this type."

Farimont le chateau Montebello

In February of 1930, the site where Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello hotel now stands was a clearing in the woods. Just four months later, the massive cedar chaeau was complete: a building feat which captured the popular imagination of the time, inspiring newspaper features across North America and attracting crowds of onlookers.

This Outaouais resort project was the dream of a Swiss-American named Hubert Saddlemire, who was inspired by the châteaux of the Swiss Alps, and dubbed the project "Lucerne-in-Québec." A Finnish master-builder named Victor Nymark supervised the construction and woodworking teams, who worked in overlapping shifts around the clock, using electric lighting at night.
