By: Christopher Roney

East Hong KongOpening in the first quarter of this year, the East Hotel in Beijing is looking to add a little spice to the East brand by moving it north from Hong Kong.  Billed as a "business hotel with a life," its 348 rooms and 21 suites will have access to all the important things a business traveler needs:  free Wi-Fi, a business center with individual working pods, accelerated paperless check-in, and of course a complete fitness center to work off the excess energy you've built up over a day of meetings.

The 'life' part of the East starts with Feast, Food by East, that fits into the business lifestyle.  Focusing on crisp, well-prepared classic food, you'll be comfortable in a bustling environment where you won't feel out of place working on your presentation for the next day.  Relax when you're done by listening to live performances in the separate bar, the perfect spot to wind down as your finishing up the day or getting ready for a night out.  The East Beijing is guaranteed to give a fresh new face to the tried and true methods of East Hong Kong, its sister hotel.

Shangri-La BeijingNo surprise to see the Shangri-La Hotel, Beijing selected as the official hotel for the 2011 China Open Tennis Tournament for the eighth year in a row. The staff has been highly trained to attend to the world's top tennis stars-- working with the players' nutritionists on specific dietary needs,* talking with their trainers about customized exercise programs and specialized massages. And of course handling all that extra laundry! A team of personal butlers was on call to make the players feel at home.

The world’s top-seeded tennis stars played the China Open from September 30 to October 9, 2011, and the Shangri-La Hotel, Beijing hosted more than 300 guests who attended the event. The hotel was also the official caterer for VIPs at the VIP lounge.

*Over the 10-day period, the hotel's chefs sourced highly nutritious ingredients in preparing carboydrate- and potassium-rich meals, amounting to at least half a ton of pasta and half a ton of bananas, 3,000 eggs, 500,000 ml of olive oil as well as truckloads of seasonal greens and fresh fruits.

September 27, 2011

Gold Vending Machine, BeijingLast May, the world gaped over the ATM-style gold vending machine installed at the Emirates Palace, one of the world's costliest hotels to build (at $3 billion). Called "Gold to Go," the machine dispenses customized coins or small bars up to 10 grams. Now we're getting word that China has followed suit, opening a gold vending machine in a busy shopping district in Beijing. We can't say we're surprised. A recent article in The Independent (UK), titled "Shanghai's Young High Rollers Splurge on Luxury," calls attention to the growing market for luxury goods in China, and millionaires keen to hedge their bets against inflation may cash in on gold. All we can say: look out for pickpockets.

Chef Yannick Alléno Plans S.T.A.Y Restaurant for Shangri-La Hotel Beijing

May 11, 2011
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

Yannick Alleno, Shangri-La Hotel BeijingLook out, Beijing. A big-time French chef-- a dapper dude named Yannick Alléno-- is coming to town. The Michelin three-starred chef of Le Meurice fame is opening one of his S.T.A.Y eateries at the Shangri-La Hotel Beijing in September. Short for "Simple Table Alléno Yannick," S.T.A.Y has already made a splash at One & Only The Palm in Dubai and Royal Mansour in Marrakech. The concept restaurant reinvents simple French cuisine, made with fresh, seasonal produce, in a stylish, contemporary setting amongst friends. Some nice touches at the Beiing restaurant: chopsticks will be on hand for diners, and a Communal Table will provide the opportunity for sharing-style dining. Like an authentic French patisserie, the Pastry Library will present exquisite, hand-crafted sweets where guests can participate in the process by choosing a final topping for their dessert. Bon Appetit!
