The Caribbean’s Longest Bar: Wow Factors at Grace Bay Club, Turks and Caicos

December 17, 2007
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

Grace Bay Club, Infiniti BarAfter some big time renovations in September 2007, Grace Bay Club has emerged as one of the finest resorts on the scene in the hopping destination of Turks and Caicos. What's new in terms of luxury amenities? Anani Spa Tents (manicures, pedicures and massage therapy just steps from the lapping sea), 100 chic new day beds (think chilled sorbet, fresh fruit and traditional beach service by the pool), a kid's treehouse, chic new beachfront interiors at the celebrated gourmet eatery Anancaona, and as reported in the NYT this weekend, the Infiniti Bar, the Caribbean's longest. Stretching 90 feet across the Grace Bay Club beach, the bar is constructed of black marble, creating the illusion that the entire structure is floating above the sand and extending indefinitely into the Caribbean Sea. Dine under shaded umbrellas with the waves at your feet. Inside, baccarat black glass chandeliers decorate the ceiling and the walls glow in blue and gold Bisazza glass tiles.

December 11, 2007
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

Viceroy AnguillaForget St. Barts. Head to Anguilla, the jewel of the British West Indies, where laid-back luxury and a "magnificent island lifestyle" will be celebrated at the brand new Viceroy Anguilla. The Caribbean island was recently picked by the NYT as one of "53 places to go in 2008" and the latest offering from the Kor Hotel Group's Viceroy brand is a major reason why. Nestled on 35 acres of exclusive beachfront, the resort promises every possible pleasure with incomparable amenities: a world-class spa village, fine dining, elite concierge services, and a wealth of recreational amenities including tennis courts, infinity-edge pools, resort boats service, and Kids Club. This Spring 2008, discover "where the sublime meets the sea."

New Luxury Travel Destinations

December 5, 2007
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

Amanresorts, BhutanA recent article in the Washington Post describes the "destination fatigue-- been there, done that, paid a big bill"-- that affects a growing number of high-end travelers. When you've vacationed in Patagonia, the BVI, and the Greek Islands, and cruised the Nile and Yangtze rivers, what's next? The answer is remote, off-the-map destinations that once only appealed to backpackers. The newest hotspots are places like Bhutan, where Amanresorts has opened a string of luxury lodges that allow travelers to discover this incredible Himalayan kingdom without having to rough it. We'd count China's Yunnan province on the list, as well as luxury safaris in Africa, and hotels in northern India. What's your next luxury travel destination?

Four Seasons Resort NevisIt’s that time of year again. The sparse weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, when the temperatures keep dropping and we find ourselves "cubicle dreamin." Sailing Week in Antigua and a Blissful Stay at Carlisle Bay

November 26, 2007
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

Antigua Sailing WeekThink ahead to a Caribbean getaway this spring. The place to be in April is the island of Antigua, when the most prestigious yacht regatta in the Caribbean (and one of the most famous in the world) lures racers and revelers to its tropical shores. The Stanford Antigua Sailing Week starts on the last Sunday of the month (April 27, 2008) and runs through Saturday, May 3. Sailors and spectators from all corners of the globe converge to watch the 200 yachts go head to head in five challenging days of racing in some of the best sailing conditions found on the globe. The island's best luxury lodgings are found at Carlisle Bay, that cool contemporary hideaway that exudes chic sophistication in every detail. The setting is stunning on the unspoiled beaches on the island's south coast, and the amenities even more so: state-of-the-art gym, exceptional spa, enormous ocean-facing suites, recreational facilities galore, the new Cool Kids Club, and the only private screening room in the Caribbean for nightly movie showings.

Free Fourth Night in Vieques, Puerto Rico at Hix Island House

November 9, 2007
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

Hix Island HouseGet lost in luxury at the Hix Island House. There's been a lot of buzz about this eco-chic hideaway on the nature lover's island delight of Vieques. Formerly the home of environmentally-minded architect John Hix, the spacious lofts of Hix Island House showcase mind-blowing views of sea and sky. Set on 13 acres, the concrete building was designed to reflect the gray granite boulders of the island. The hotel does a lot more than blend gracefully into the surrounding environment; Hix Island House champions eco-friendly practices. Solar heated outdoor showers return water to the gardens, and the swimming pool is kept clean without the use of excess chemicals. From now until December 19, 2007, take advantage of the Fall Escape Special. Stay two nights and take a third night at half off. Stay three nights and get your fourth night for free. (Excludes the Thanksgiving holiday, November 19- November 25, 2007.) Now is the time to GO! (Any doubt in your mind-- just check out the reviews on TripAdvisor.)

St. Kitts Goes Classy: New Hotels by Auberge Resorts and Mandarin Oriental

October 30, 2007
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

Auberge Resort, St. KittsJust across from the isle of Nevis in the lower Caribbean, St. Kitts hasn't defined its own tourism niche the way neighboring Nevis has lured well-heeled travelers. Until now, anyway. There's a new high-end development in store, and it promises to dazzle. Christophe Harbour, the 2,500-acre development, will boast luxury hotels from Mandarin Oriental and Auberge Resorts. And if Auberge's new Sandy Bank Bay is any bit as exceptional as its other properties (Auberge du Soleil, Esperanza, The Inn at Palmetto Bluff), we're in for a treat. Situated on a peninsula, the resort site features seven miles of sandy coastline facing both the turquoise Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean. There will also be a spa and a Tom Fazio-designed golf course. Auberge's resort is slated for 2009, with the Mandarin Oriental following in 2010.

Cloud 9 on Jamaica: Half Moon Debuts Fern Tree Spa

October 25, 2007
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

Half MoonHow to improve on perfection? Open a splendid, new spa called Fern Tree. The timelessly elegant Half Moon, a favorite Caribbean hideaway, has opened the doors to a new facility that will knock your socks off. Celebrated as "a destination within a destination," the spa is housed in the resort's signature Fern Tree House; the conversion retained the original colonial design of hardwood floors and white-washed verandahs situated in beautifully-landscaped gardens. Choose an individual spa treatment or experience a customized, step-by-step program developed by the Spa Elder, your experienced guide who is trained in the use of local indigenous ingredients. Upon arrival at this 68,000 square foot oasis, each guest enjoys a ceremonial foot bath. Treatments utilize premier skincare lines from Jamaica and Europe, highlighting the indigenous botanicals of Montego Bay (Pevonia, Thalgo, and pure essential oils from Jamaica's Blue Mountain Aromatics). Choose a luxury VIP suite and bask in the posh amenities: full bath, private patio and garden with hot tub and shower.

Caribbean Beach Bargains at La Samanna, St. Maarten

October 24, 2007
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

La SamannaExperience paradise for a song. La Samanna, an Orient-Express hideaway in the French West Indies, is a chic, white-washed wonderland where restaurant provisions are flown in from France daily. And it recently completed a multi-million dollar renovation, to boot. This beachfront spa resort has all-time low promotional rates of $395 per night during peak season. The catch? You must arrive on one of the following arrival dates: November 25 and 26, 2007, January 30, 2008, or February 26, 2008. As Travel + Leisure points out, this is a whopping 60 percent savings, as normal peak season rates start at around $1,000 a night. But hurry, this "Best Deal Days" promotion is bound to book fast.
