Buzz: Jalousie Plantation, St. Lucia, Will Morph Into The Tides Sugar Beach

By: Mary Winston Nicklin

St. LuciaThe Tides brand of chic, high-design hotels is staking a claim to the idyllic, paradise island of St. Lucia, the Caribbean's "it" spot of the moment with myriad new hotel openings. The Tides just announced plans to take over the Jalousie Plantation, give it a big makeover, and reposition it as The Tides Sugar Beach, the first Caribbean property for the luxury hotel chain. Situated in the Valley of the Pitons, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Jalousie Plantation is nestled in 192 lush acres of rainforest and white sand beaches overlooking the sea. After an $100 million redesign, the resort will reopen in 2010 as the Tides Sugar Beach, joining the collection of properties set in pristine coastal settings (the Tides hotels can be found in South Beach, the Yucatan, and Zihuatanejo). From the 150 villas and guest rooms (all with private pools), guests will be able to gape at the views of the pitons (pictured). Also planned: four restaurants serving locally grown cuisine, recreational activities aplenty, a beach lounge, and comprehensive fitness center and spa with sustainable, marine-based products.

What’s Hot: The Caribbean Island of Anguilla and the New Baccarat Hotel

By: Mary Winston Nicklin

AnguillaAnguilla has been in the press a lot these days. The Caribbean island in the British West Indies has remained pristine because of regulated development, and only three resorts have graced its beaches: Cap Juluca, CuisinArt, and Malliouhana. But 2009 will see the debut of two spanking new hotels: the Viceroy, which we noted last year, and the Baccarat Resort and Residences at Temenos. As described by Travel + Leisure in the September 2008 issue, this uber-luxe resort is being developed by Barry Sternlicht, the "mastermind behind Starwood's W, St. Regis, and Luxury Collection chains." There will be a Greg Norman golf course, a David Bouley restaurant, and world-class spa and fitness center. Plus, guests and residences will enjoy "signature Baccarat aesthetics" from the premier luxury brand. Like lots of crystal chandeliers in the lobby.

Travel Trends: Voluntourism, and Give-Back Getaways with Ritz-Carlton Hotels

By: Mary Winston Nicklin

Grand CaymanVolunteer tourism, a.k.a "voluntourism," is a growing trend in travel, and more and more travelers are jumping on the bandwagon and planning to volunteer during their vacations. Forbes Traveler sums it up nicely:

There comes a point — generally when you're on your third margarita, sunburned over 60 percent of your body and the kids are screaming in the infinity pool — when you start to wonder if there is more to the whole vacation concept than lying on a beach getting toasted. A way of showing thanks for your own good fortunes, perhaps. You want a chance to contribute more to a local economy than buying overpriced trinkets that neither you nor your friends back home really need.

Ritz-Carlton has taken notice. They've created the Give Back Getaways program- to offer guests a chance to give back to the community with half-day local community experiences, working alongside Ritz-Carlton Ladies and Gentlemen in a Community Footprints humanitarian or environmental project. All profits from the Give Back Getaways programs are donated to the partner organizations. An example is the Blue Iguana Recovery Program at the Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman, led by naturalist Jean-Michel Cousteau, where guests assist with the breeding program to help a unique species on the brink of extinction.
