James Bond is famous for his travels to exotic and luxurious locales. That's no surprise, given that the man who dreamed him up worked for British Naval Intelligence during WWII. It was during his service that Fleming was sent to Jamaica to investigate U-Boat activities in the Caribbean. Fleming fell in love with the tropical island and vowed to return as soon as he could. The name of the naval operation he was working on? GoldenEye. Fleming bought property in the village of Oracabessa Bay (which means Golden Head) and built his dream home after the war ended. There was James Bond born out of Fleming's no-doubt brain.
It took Island Records founder Chris Blackwell to turn Fleming's home into a luxury hotel. Blackwell bought the property in 1976. He has since expanded the property into a 52-acre world-class property.

"The Bahamas is celebrating the rebirth of an island icon. Last month, The Cove reemerged after a $30 million renovation to become The Cove, Eleuthera, a 40-acre luxury resort of cottages and villas.
The new construction included two three-bedroom residential villas, each with private pool and staff. A two-story Sanctuary including 20 suites was also part of the new debut, along with eight Bush cottages and Bar Tony, a bar built into a point reaching 600 feet into the Caribbean Sea. All rooms and suites have iPod docking stations, 500 thread-count linens, 50-inch flat-screen TVs and more.
Significant improvements were put into the Library interior and open-air fine dining restaurant Freedom. A new 110-foot infinity pool overlooking the sea was also developed.
The resort debuted with total fanfare as guests feasted on Bahamian delicacies and were treated to performances from singer Aaron Neville and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band of New Orleans.
Getting There: The Cove, Eleuthera, wants guests to arrive in true VIP style. The resort’s own private plane offers daily nonstop flights to and from Fort Lauderdale, FL, on its own Hawker 800XP. Wine is to France, as rum is to the Caribbean is a good rule of thumb when thinking of spirits and vacationing. But, where can one go to experience both? How about La Samanna, a private resort located on the Caribbean isles of the French-side of Central Saint Martin? The location and cultures on this island alone brings the best of spirit worlds together: rum and wine. If you are a guest at La Samanna, the property offers both wine and rum tastings at their on-site restaurant: La Cave. Guided by an expert sommelier for your wine and rum tastings, guests get some education and the opportunity to sample some of the finest wines and rums France and the Caribbean has to offer.
Accompanied by a selection of fruits and cheese to pair your wine and or rum with, both activities can be done conveniently at La Samanna’s restaurant La Cave. With a majority of rum production taking place in the Caribbean, La Samanna has followed suit and delighted to announce that they have produced their own line of rum. Partnered with a renowned rum producer, the property’s rum can be tasted amongst many other of the region’s finest. The tastings have been said to be an experiential learning experience, as many guests discover how to mix different rums to create certain tastes, and/or learning about great wine and cheese and fruit pairings.
Five Star Alliance's sister publication, Luxury Travel Advisor, recently wrote an article about the new Hotel St. Barth Isle de France. Read more here:
We’re just back from St. Barth where we spent a lovely afternoon at Hotel St. Barth Isle de France. The resort, which is a member of the Oetker Collection (think Le Bristol Paris, Hôtel du Cap Eden-Roc and the Palais Namaskar in Marrakech, Morocco), is a true jetset venue. Since it’s a mere five-minute drive from the airport, you can don your flip-flops and be sipping Sauvignon Blanc on Flamand Beach in no time as you’re still shaking off your cold weather blues.
When you arrive, you’ll get the vibe that everything at Hotel St. Barth Isle de France is pure white against a blue, blue sea. And it is white and fresh, thanks in large part to a recent renovation to its garden bungalows and public areas. We were able to get a good walk-through to one of the just-turned-two Flamands Villas (No. 43). There are two of these enormous three-bedroom suites which measure 4,300 square feet in size. Smart Move: Each of the bedrooms is of equal size, with a private bath, so there’s no stress about divvying up the sleeping quarters if you’re sharing with other couples or on a girlfriend getaway. More good things: Bathrooms have double sinks and roomy tubs. Both suites as well have full, real working kitchens near their respective living rooms, which open up to a terrace, complete with a plunge infinity pool overlooking the Caribbean and they have direct access to the beach. Other lush touches? Each has an exercise room and a home cinema. Life is good.
If a Flamands Villa isn’t large enough for your special party, consider adding on a suite next door, which measures 1,300 square feet.
What we loved: Lunch at the alfresco La Case de l’Isle overlooking the sea is a must, even if you’re just in town for the day off a luxury cruise. The menu is simple and French and the crowd that gathers is cosmopolitan and international and usually quite tan and fashionable. We started off with the refreshing soupe glacée de petits pois, bruschetta de prosciutto et poivrons grilles, which is an iced pea soup served with a prosciutto ham, and grilled peppers bruschetta. For a unique dish to share with your dining companion, consider the “Wok de gambas et poulet marine,” which is a shrimp and marinated chicken wok dish served with Thai noodles. (P.S.: A continental breakfast is included in the room rate.)
The spa here has four treatment rooms and uses Natura Bissé and Intraceuticals skincare products. There’s also a Spa Pavilion set in the resort’s tropical gardens.
