Spa Treatments We'd Like to Try

December 31, 2013
By: K. Clare Johnson

So many spas, so little time!  With over 4,000 luxury hotels on the site, we have a lot of great spa spots.

Here are a few treatments offered at luxury hotel spas that have recently caught our eye:

-The Spa at Aria (pictured at right) in Las Vegas offers a Shio Salt room. Taking in salt through inhalation is thought to provide respiratory benefits. The illuminated wall of Shio salt bricks is complemented by salt lamps, vibration therapy, and radiant music.

-Intercontinental Thalosso Spa Bora Bora's fittingly named Deep Ocean Spa has glass-floored overwater bungalows enabling you to admire the marine life during your treatment. We'd go for the Deep Sea Hydromassage Bath with Chromatherapy.

-Nob Hill Spa at The Huntington Hotel offers a Cinnamon Ginger Escape.  An exfoliating spiced marmalade scrub with ground nutmeg is followed by an energizing massage using smooth pebbles wrapped in aromatic spice bags soaked in warm oil.

-Hotel Hershey, fittingly, offers a Whipped Cocoa bath,  Chocolate Bean Polish and a Chocolate Fondue wrap in their Chocolate Spa. We'll take all three!

-A  visit to Calistoga isn't complete without a stop at a winery and at the hot springs. After you've visited both,  Napa Valley's Solage Calistoga (pictured at left) has a three-part Mudslide Experience that involves a customized mud body wrap, a relaxing soak in geo-thermal mineral water from their own spring, and then zoning out in a state-of-the-art sound/vibration chair.

-Prague's Hotel Augustine has a St. Thomas Beer Body Ritual. Created using a secret recipe from the Augustinian order of Monks.  It starts with an exfoliation using ground organic beer hops and St. Thomas dark beer, and then finished with a full-body massage.

-Hotel Il Salviatino (pictured at top) offers an an Antixodant Wine Gel Peel. It's a body scrub using red wine gel and exfoliating seeds, followed up by a therapist-supervised aromatic vapor experience and a highly moisturizing massage.

Did You Know? The Hotel Windsor Melbourne

Hotel Windsor Melbourne

The Hotel Windsor Melbourne was the dream of shipping magnate George Nipper. He commissioned architect Charles Webb to design the hotel and it opened its doors in December 1883. The Hotel Windsor predates many of the grand hotels of the Victorian era, including The Savoy London, The Plaza, The Waldorf Astoria New York, the Hotel Ritz Paris,  and The Raffles, Singapore.

George Nipper sold the "Grand", as it was then known, to James Munro who embarked on a massive expansion program. This doubled the size of the hotel, and saw the addition of the renowned Grand Ballroom, the Grand Staircase, and the twin cupola-capped towers.

At this point the hotel was known as the Grand Coffee Palace and for a brief period, under the influence of the Temperance Movement, banned liquor from its premises. By 1897, however, the hotel once again changed hands, welcomed back its original name, and regained its liquor license. From then on and for the better part of the 20th century, The Hotel Windsor Melbourne was a pivotal centre in the city and, indeed, Australia, for the political and social milieu. Australia's constitution was drafted at The Hotel Windsor between February and March 1898.

Did You Know? Eichardts Private Hotel

Eichardts Private Hotel

Eichardts Private Hotel was born as a result of the rich vein of gold, which drew many prospectors, opportunists and downright optimists from around the globe to the shores of Lake Wakatipu. The quest for pastoral land brought William Gilbert Rees to the shores of Lake Wakatipu in 1859 when he built a homestead on the lakefront and erected a woolshed on the site now occupied by Eichardt's Hotel. When gold was discovered in the nearby Shotover River, Rees found himself at the centre of a gold rush - his homestead declared an official goldfield and the main business area developed around the station. The entrepreneurial Rees quickly turned to the hotel keeping business, the woolshed was given a wooden facade and turned into a hotel and named the Queen's Arms. In early 1866, Rees entered into partnership with Albert Eichardt who went on to become the sole proprietor of the hotel by 1869. Eichardt renamed the hotel Eichardt's Queen's Arms Hotel, but during his time there, it came to be known simply as Eichardt's Hotel where he catered mostly for tourists as the tenor of the town evolved from a mining settlement to something more permanent.
