By: Mary Winston Nicklin

Peninsula BangkokThe stunning, 39-storey Peninsula Bangkok is situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya River and offers uninterrupted panoramic views of the city from every one of its guest rooms. The award-winning hotel takes advantage of its killer location by offering some scenic inspiration for guests to relax in style with a river cruise, gliding past scenes of river life on the Peninsula's signature river boat en route to the fascinating Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn). Guests who indulge in the Afternoon Tea cruise are escorted off the boat to visit the heritage site of Wat Arun, the 80-meter high pagoda that stands on the west bank of the river, built when Ayudhaya was the former capital of Thailand. The Peninsula Afternoon Tea on the River departs on Saturday and Sunday and is priced at Baht 1,500. The Sundown Cocktail Cruise departs daily from the hotel pier at 6 pm and includes unlimited drinks and canapés for Baht 1,000 per person.

The World’s Tallest Skyscrapers: Move Over, Sears Tower and Empire State Building

June 20, 2008
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

Burj DubaiWe've been following the steady growth of the Burj Dubai as its spire gets higher and higher- its final height planned to be 1,000 feet higher than Taipei 101, the world's current record holder. But tall building construction is not limited to the Burj Dubai, the $1 billion anchor of a $20 billion development in downtown Dubai. There's the Mubarak al-Kabir tower in Kuwait, the Russia Tower in Moscow, and the Incheon Tower in South Korea. As the New York Times recently pointed out, supertalls are "rising at a frenetic pace around the globe," especially in Asia and the Middle East, reflecting the "expanding economies of these regions and their desire to compete for international status and business." The list of the 20 tallest buildings in 2020 will include only 2 properties from the U.S.: the Chicago Spire and the One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower) in New York.

June 19, 2008
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

InterContinental Hong KongIt doesn't get much better than this. The InterContinental Hong Kong recently unveiled two new specialty suites with large terraces and outdoor Jacuzzis and a series of Patio Rooms and Suites with teak decks and glass walls. You can't beat the panoramic views of Victoria Harbour and Hong Kong Island from these stellar accommodations in the waterfront InterContinental Hong Kong, located in Kowloon's prime shopping, business and entertainment district. With suites this spectacular, the InterContinental knows that this is the ideal spot to sweep that special someone off his or her feet. They've designed the "Romance with Style" experience which means a special outdoor bedroom set-up, plus a romantic dinner and Couple's I-Spa Treatment on the suite's private terrace. The hotel also offers help with planning your engagement. The "Proposals with Style – by Land, Sea or Sky" includes a Proposal Consultant to assist the groom-to-be in planning the special moment and a customized "Will You Marry Me?" banner – for a special "cruise" or "fly-by" the private terrace suite at the designated time. Truly the star treatment, says Daily Candy, with 24-hour butler service, an infinity-edge Jacuzzi, a chauffeured Bentley limo, and a bottle of Dom. Did we mention that SPOON by Alain Ducasse and Nobu restaurants are just downstairs?

Best Value Luxury Hotel: The Peninsula Tokyo

June 4, 2008
By: Mary Winston Nicklin

Peninsula TokyoWe've been raving about the amazing technology and perfectly-designed rooms at the Peninsula Tokyo for awhile now. Posh hotels abound in Tokyo, but the Peninsula Tokyo stands apart (even in this crowded field in the Japanese capital). This was the first outpost for the Peninsula brand in Tokyo, and the first free-standing hotel to be built here in a decade. The location couldn't be more perfect: across the street from the Imperial Palace and blocks from the Ginza. It's little wonder that this magnificent hotel was recently listed as a "Great Value/Business Hotel" in the Travel + Leisure "It List":

The incredible palace views-- the best of any Tokyo hotel-- won us over, but Peninsula didn't stop there. The rooms are among the city's largest, starting at 544 square feet, and-- appropriately-- its most high-tech. Gizmos range from the convenient (bedside consoles that control drapes, panels that display outside temperature and humidity) to the luxe (Lavazza espresso machines) to the incredibly useful. We never realized how handy a personal nail dryer could be.
