Did You Know? The Merrion

March 7, 2014
By: Five Star Alliance

The Merrion

One of the most recognizable features of Dublin luxury hotel The Merrion is its two landscaped period gardens. They were designed by Jim Reynolds, a noted Irish landscape artist.

The smaller of the two, known as "Lady Mornington's Garden," links The Main House to the Garden Wing. This contemporary wing completes the enclosure of the garden, so that many of the guestrooms enjoy views over the large central garden. Both gardens re-create the feel of an 18th century garden with box hedges, water features, pathways, statuary and obelisks.

In summer, the large garden becomes an extension of the drawing rooms in The Main House, with waiter service so that guests can dine al fresco.

In 2004, to celebrate the fifth successful year of operation for The Merrion, the board of directors commissioned a rose to celebrate this milestone anniversary. Working with the Amateur Rose Growers Association’s David Kenny, an Irish rose grower from Co Carlow, The Merrion Rose was planted in the extensive gardens of the hotel. A patio style rose, The Merrion Rose, growing to a height of around 75 cms, is of a deep rose pink hue with a yellow, white eye.

Cheval Blanc Randheli
Prince William and Kate Middleton have whisked away to a second honeymoon. The trip, which started today, is reportedly at Cheval Blanc Randheli in the Maldives. Much like the first go-round, Baby George will be staying at home. Located n the Noonu Atoll, Island Randheli reveals an extraordinary vegetation. In this protected environment which combines ephemeral flowers and majestic trees, nature reveals rich, opulent, lush and changes with the seasons, reserving each visit a unique vegetal decoration. Guests reach the island via a 40-minute transfer in a customized Cheval Blanc seaplane.

At Cheval Blanc Randheli, Architect Jean-Michel Gathy has conceived of uniquely designed spaces skillfully combining local traditions with the finest materials to create a stunning modern and graphical structure that is in complete harmony with its pristine and natural surroundings. It has 45 loft-style tropical villas which have a large living room, adjoining powder room, double dressing rooms and bedrooms and light-flooded bathrooms. In a decor combining Maldivian inspirations and contemporary lines, the villas offer a unique residential experience. A work of art by Vincent Beaurin well-rounded, with specific villa color punctuates the sequence of volumes and inevitably catches the eye.

Guests can swim in their vast private villa swimming pool, sunbathe on their private white sand beach, enjoy a live-cooked dinner in the garden, or relax on a daybed on their pontoon right over the lagoon all in the intimacy of their villa. Did You Know? Hamilton Turner Inn

March 6, 2014
By: Five Star Alliance

Hamilton Turner InnHamilton Turner Inn was built  in 1873 for Savannah alderman Samuel Pugh Hamilton and his family. In 1883, the Hamilton mansion was the first residence in Savannah  to have electricity installed.  The entire house was fitted with electric lights by 1886, around the time Hamilton became president of the Brush Electric Light & Power Company.

Dr. Francis Turner purchased the house from the Hamilton estate in 1915 and lived there with his family until 1926. The mansion was opened for boarding and became a home for the Marine Hospital nurses in 1928. The Turner family moved back into the home in the 1940s, and the courtyard level was Turner's medical office.

The Turner family sold the house in 1965 to the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. The plan was to knock the building down and turn the lot into a school playground. The Historic Savannah Foundation intervened, and the mansion was spared from the wrecking ball.

Over the next 30 years, the Hamilton-Turner house changed hands several times, at one point even being converted into apartments. The Inn even appears in John Berendt’s best-selling book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

In 1997, The Hamilton-Turner mansion was converted into an inn.

Did You Know? Hotel El Convento

March 5, 2014
By: Five Star Alliance

Hotel El Convento
A landmark monument to the Conquistador Age, Hotel El Convento in San Juan, Puerto Rico showcases a timeless aura of Old World charm and splendor. As the first Carmelite Convent in the Americas, it housed nuns for 252 years until closing a few days before Christmas in 1903. Vacant for a decade, the abandoned building served as a retail store, a dance hall, and, for the next 40 years, a flophouse without running water, sanitary facilities, or electricity.

Opened on Jan. 27, 1962 as El Convento Hotel, it offered a tranquil, European-style alternative to the glitzy hotels lining the Condado strip.
